The Maritime Lady was a coaster that collided with a container ship on December 5, 2005 on the Elbe near Brunsbüttel and capsized .

history

The ship was built in 1984 at the Ruhrort shipyard in Duisburg . It got going as a gama . From 1995 to 1996 the ship sailed as Lys Captain in charter of the Lys Line. At the end of 1998 the ship was sold and renamed Gatje . From April 2000 to December 2005 it sailed as Sea Ems . On December 2, 2005, the ship was sold to Norway and operated as Maritime Lady by Maritime Management in Leikanger .

Collision in December 2005

The Maritime Lady was on 5 December 2005 on the ride down the same direction North Sea . The ship had loaded 1,805 t of potassium carbonate in Hamburg , which was to be shipped to New Holland on the Humber in the United Kingdom . There were seven crew members , four Poles and three Russians on board .

During the passage through the locks of the Kiel Canal, the Arctic Ocean container feeder , which entered the Elbe towards Hamburg from the canal, collided with the Maritime Lady . The Maritime Lady capsized on the starboard side within about ten minutes after the collision. The crew was picked up by the two pilot transfer boats, Captain Kircheiss and Osterriff , who had come to the rescue . A seaman injured himself while leaving the ship. In addition to the pilot transfer boats, the Maritime Lady also came to the aid of the rescue boat Gillis Gullbransson stationed in Brunsbüttel, and the rescue cruiser Hermann Helms stationed in Cuxhaven was alerted.

The Maritime Lady drove after the collision with the ebb and came at the edge of the fairway stuck in shallow water werdendem. Around one and a half hours after the Arctic Ocean collided with the Maritime Lady , the chemical tanker Sunny Blossom, coming from the Kiel Canal, collided with the wreck of the Maritime Lady lying on its side . The wreck of the Maritime Lady then began to drift again, capsized and finally lay keel up. The Sunny Blossom drifted to the south side of the Elbe river and got stuck here. The ship could later be pulled back into the fairway with the help of a tug with the water running up.

The wreck of the Maritime Lady was recovered on December 12, one week after the collision, with the help of a lifting catamaran and towed to the America harbor in Cuxhaven . There it was sealed and then rotated using a floating crane .

The Maritime Lady was badly damaged by a collision, capsizing and salvage . As a result of the impact of the bow of the Arctic Ocean , a hole had been torn in the starboard side of the Maritime Lady in the forward area of the hold . The hole, which reached through the side wall and side tanks into the hold, had a diameter of about five meters and reached into the double floor . The hatch covers were torn off except for two segments, the wheelhouse was compressed, the chimney and masts were kinked or lost.

The ship was declared a total loss and later scrapped.

Technical data and equipment

The propulsion of the ship was carried out by a MaK - diesel engine of the type 6M322AK with 749  kW power . The motor acted on a fixed propeller via a reduction gear . The ship reached a speed of 10.5  knots . Two diesel generators, each with an output of 96 kW ( total apparent output 256.5  kVA ) were available for the power supply. The ship was equipped with a bow thruster .

The superstructures were in the rear of the ship. They consisted of the living room deck with the chambers for the crew members, galley , mess and storage rooms and the wheelhouse above. The engine room was located below the living room deck in the ship's hull . The ship was built relatively flat for crossing under bridges over rivers or canals. The masts were foldable. In front of the superstructure was the 51.30 meter long and 10.15 meter wide hold . The hold was closed with hydraulically operated folding hatch covers consisting of eight segments .

The ship was prepared for container transport. The container capacity was 102  TEU . 62 TEU could be loaded in space, 40 on deck.
