The village of Markau is located in the northwestern part of the Altmark, seven kilometers northwest of Dehre and around 25 kilometers west of the district town of Salzwedel on the Grabower Graben, which flows into the Salzwedeler Dumme .. In the southwest of the village is the 103 meter high Markauer Berg. The cemetery is in the west of the village on the edge of the forest.
The state border between Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony is around three kilometers away.
history
The place was originally a rudimentary rural village .
The village of Markau is first mentioned in 1242 as villa Merkow and belonged to the Diesdorf monastery .
There was a brick factory in the south of the village. Due to its location near the inner-German border , the place was within the 5 km exclusion zone established in 1954 and was increasingly falling into disrepair. In the course of the change in the GDR , the rightful owners got their properties back and in 2012 all houses in the village were inhabited again.
Incorporations
On April 1, 1938, the communities of Markau and Holzhausen in the Salzwedel district were merged to form a community of Markhausen . This community of Markhausen was dissolved again when on July 1, 1950 the communities of Markhausen and Wiewohl were merged to form the community of Holzhausen. On January 1, 1991, the municipality of Holzhausen from the Salzwedel district was incorporated into the municipality of Lagendorf.
The local council of Lagendorf decided on May 8, 2008 to dissolve the community and merge it with the communities of Bonese and Dehre to form the new community with the name of Dehre . This contract came into effect on January 1, 2009.
So the district of Markau came to the municipality of Dehre on January 1st, 2009.
