Martin Tchiba (* 1982 in Budapest ) is a German - Hungarian pianist .

Life

Martin Tchiba has lived in Germany since 1985. During his school days he was a student of the piano teacher Karl-Heinz Kämmerling in Hanover . After graduating from high school in Essen-Werden in 2000, he studied piano with Thomas Duis at the Saarland University of Music and Theater in Saarbrücken until 2004 . From 2005 to 2008 he continued his studies with Jean-Jacques Dünki at the University of Music in Basel . In addition, he attended master classes and workshops with Lazar Berman , György Kurtág and Yukiko Sugawara-Lachenmann, among others . From 1998 to 2002 he also studied composition with Michael Denhoff in Bonn .

Tchiba has given international concerts as a soloist and chamber music partner, including at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam , the Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, the Budapest Autumn Festival, the Budapest Music Weeks, the Spoleto Festival, the Braunschweig Classix Festival, the European Classic Festival Ruhr , the Ensemblia Mönchengladbach , and the Festival “Scene: hungary in nrw” at the Unicum Festival in the Slovenian Philharmonic in Ljubljana , at the Enescu Festival in Romania, in the Flagey in Brussels, in the Tonhalle Düsseldorf and in the Beethoven House in Bonn . He has also performed at venues for new music, such as the Gare du Nord in Basel , the Stichting Logos in Ghent and the Alte Feuerwache in Cologne. In 2017, his “Social Media Piano Recital” “WIReless” took place in the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, to which composers contributed piano pieces via social networks and concert-goers could interactively participate in the musical events using smartphones.

In its concert programs, Tchiba combines the classical-romantic repertoire with contemporary music. He intends to show connecting lines between "old" and "new" and to present different - sometimes deliberately contradicting - aesthetic standpoints and to contrast them with one another. He played numerous world premieres , among others by Gerhard Stäbler , Moritz Eggert , Johannes Kreidler , György Kurtág and Michael Denhoff; many of the works that have premiered are dedicated to him. Tchiba is committed to music that has "unjustly been forgotten", such as the works of the Hungarian-Dutch composer Géza Frid .

Tchiba has so far recorded five CDs for the Challenge Classics, Naxos, Hungaroton and Telos Music labels . He also made recordings for radio and television, among others for the broadcasters WDR , SWR , SR , BR , Deutschlandradio Kultur , Hungarian radio and Dutch radio . The culture radio of the RBB from Berlin broadcast a portrait program about the pianist. Dutch television repeatedly engaged Tchiba for recordings in the Amsterdam Bimhuis .

In addition to his work as a pianist, Tchiba also appears as a composer . His works were premiered at the International Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam and at the A • DEvantgarde Festival in Munich . Tchiba also wrote a number of articles on music topics, including for the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik and the neue musikzeitung .

As part of “Bipolar - German-Hungarian Cultural Projects”, Martin Tchiba was the artistic director of a project on the subject of “innovative music education” in 2006/07. In this context he also acted as editor and co-translator (from Hungarian) of the book "Exercises for Creative Music" by László Sáry .

In 2002 Tchiba received a cultural grant from the state capital of Saarbrücken. From 2003 to 2006 he was a scholarship holder of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and from 2006 to 2007 a scholarship from the DAAD . In 2018 he was awarded the Music Prize of the State Capital Düsseldorf .

Tchiba currently lives in Velbert .
