Mastic Scum is a death metal band from Vienna . The band was founded in 1992 and originally comes from Salzburg . The brothers Harry (guitar) and Man Gandler (drums) live in Vienna, the current singer Markus “Maggo” Wenzel lives in Innsbruck and the bassist Wolfgang Rothbauer in Linz .

Band history

Mastic Scum was founded in 1992 as a death metal band with hardcore punk influences in Salzburg and released a demo that same year . The line-up consisted of the brothers Harry (guitar) and Man Gandler (drums), singer Will and bassist Christian “Linga” Moser. In 1993 the band signed with the German label Rødel Records, which released the 12 '' EP Ephemeral Cerebral Butchery (1993) and the 7 '' EP Tilt (1996). Steff Moser replaced his brother Christian as bass player. With their 1994 demo, the group began to lean more towards grindcore . A live tape and several split releases (including Rotten Sound, Haemorrhage , Fleshless) were released on the DIY scene via various independent labels , which made the band internationally known. Man Gandler worked as a session drummer for the band Belphegor , for which he drummed up Blutsabbath (1997) and Necrodaemon Terrorsathan (2000).

In 1999 the debut album Zero was released on the German label Noise V. The band also plays at the Fuck the Commerce Festival. In the meantime, various crossover elements have been added to the Grindcore style . After a European tour through Germany and the Netherlands, the band signed a record deal with Cudgel Agency (organizers of the Fuck-the-Commerce and Party.San festivals) and released their second album, Scar . In 2003 the group played a European tour as a support act for Master and Lividity .

In 2004 Alex de Court joined the band as the new bass player. This is followed by 2 concerts in the USA, including at the Central Illinois Metalfest . With the 2005 album MIND, which was released again on the Cudgel Agency label , Mastic Scum became a death metal band. with Grindcore influences. Gerhard Vellusig (Fast Forward Studio) and Horst Pfaffelmayer (Goldchamber Mastering) worked together for the production.

In spring 2007, for the 15th anniversary, the compilation The EP's Collection 1993-2002 was released on the Power It Up label. This CD contains all of the band's vinyl releases from 1993 to 2002. This is followed by a 15th Anniversary Festival Tour in Europe. In 2008 the line-up will be changed. The line-up is changed with Boris “Bobby B. Bastard” Balogh (bass) and Markus “Maggo” Wenzel (singer) ( incest , Tristwood).

The 2009 album Dust, which was released on Twilight Records, started with its predecessor and offered technical death metal that contained only a few Grindcore bonds. A European tour with Vader and Marduk followed . Then Boris Balogh will be replaced by Alex Schmid (also with the Viennese death metal band Days of Loss ).

In 2010 Mastic Scum was nominated in the Hard & Heavy category for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award , but had to admit defeat to Kontrust .

In spring 2012 the band signed a record deal with the German label Massacre Records . The 5th studio album CTRL was released on December 6, 2013 and started with the predecessor. It offers technical Death Metal with more industrial elements. For the production, Tue Madsen (Antfarm Studio) and Mike Kronstorfer (Metalforge Studio) worked together. The artwork was designed by Lukas Lancko (IsisDesignStudio). For this album a total of 3 official video clips Controlled Collapse , Dehumanized and Cause & Effect were released.

In 2016 the DVD Rage [Live & Rare] was released with a live concert from the Vienna scene , 9 official video clips and bonus material with a total of over 180 minutes. Length published on Grindwork Production. The artwork for the DVD was again designed by Lukas Lancko (IsisDesignStudio).

In spring 2017 there was a change of line-up on bass, Ales Schmid was replaced by Wolfgang Rothbauer ( Thirdmoon , In Slumber , GodHateCode). In autumn the split 7 "EP Defy with Head Cleaner was released, which was released on Screaming Victims Records. The material again contains more Grindcore elements and is reminiscent of the band's earlier days. Mike Kronstorfer (Metalforge Studio) worked again for the production, the artwork was designed by Remy Cooper Headsplit Design. In early 2019, Tape , a compilation of songs from all tape releases, was released on cassette via Extreme Terror Production.
