Matthew Richard "Matt" Bartkowski (born June 4, 1988 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Minnesota Wild from the National Hockey League since July 2018 and at the same time for their farm team, the Iowa Wild , in the American Hockey League is used.

Career

youth

Matt Bartkowski played high school in his hometown of Mount Lebanon , a suburb of Pittsburgh , for the Mt. Lebanon High School Blue Devils and captained them in 2006 for the first state championship in 30 years. He then left his home and was now on the ice for the stars of the United States Hockey League in Lincoln, which is more than 1000 kilometers away . After initial difficulties in the first year he scored 41 points in 60 games in the following season 2007/08, reached the semifinals of the Clark Cup with the team and was elected to the USHL First All-Star Team . In the subsequent 2008 NHL Entry Draft , Bartkowski was selected in 190th position by the Florida Panthers . From summer 2008 he attended Ohio State University and played for the Buckeyes in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . In the first season there he already had 20 points in 41 games and was appointed to the CCHA All-Rookie Team at the end of the season .

Boston Bruins

Even before the following sophomore year was over, the Panthers transferred him to the Boston Bruins together with Dennis Seidenberg in March 2010 and received in return Byron Bitz , Craig Weller and a two-round draft pick for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft . In April of the same year Bartkowski signed an entry level contract with the Bruins, so that he was available immediately and his time at Ohio State was over. Following the preparations for the 2010/11 season , the defender was, as expected, handed over to the AHL farm team of the Bruins, the Providence Bruins .

Bartkowski spent a large part of the 2010/11 season in the AHL, until he was called up to the NHL squad for the first time in January 2011 due to the injury of Mark Stuart and on January 10, 2013 against the team from his home country, the Pittsburgh Penguins , made his NHL debut. Another five missions followed during the regular season; in addition, Bartkowski was regularly in the play-off squad of the Bruins, who won the Stanley Cup without him getting Ice Age . This situation did not change during the entire 2011/12 season , in which he was mainly used for the Providence Bruins and in only three games in the NHL. In the AHL, meanwhile, he got 22 points in 50 games; but had to take a break at the end of the season due to an injury.

In the following season, Bartkowski was mostly in the AHL on the ice, but was able to increase his NHL stakes to eleven. He also took part with the Boston Bruins again in the Stanley Cup play-offs , but was used here for the first time and scored his first NHL goal in the second game of the Conference quarter-finals against the Toronto Maple Leafs . Boston only failed in the final of the Stanley Cup with 2: 4 to the Chicago Blackhawks . Since the 2013/14 season , Bartkowski was firmly in the NHL squad and was regularly used.

Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, and Minnesota Wild

After his expiring contract was not extended after the 2014/15 season, the defender joined the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent in July 2015 . There he played 80 games over the course of the season, but received no new offer after the contract expired. Bartkowski then went back to the AHL after a trial training session with the Ottawa Senators in the pre-season was unsuccessful. He signed up with his ex-team, the Providence Bruins, in October, where he played 34 games until mid-February 2017. Since the American was offered a trial contract by the Calgary Flames from the NHL at this time , the Bruins finally dissolved his contract and the defender moved to Calgary. There he was committed the next day for a period of two years. In the 2017/18 season, however, he was only used irregularly for the Flames and ended the season with 18 appearances. As a result, his expiring contract was not renewed, so he signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Wild in July 2018 .
