Matthias Quent
Matthias Quent (* 1986 in Thuringia ) is a German sociologist and right-wing extremism researcher .
Life
Quent grew up in Thuringia and studied sociology , political science and modern history at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the University of Leicester . In 2012, he was awarded the young talent award in the research area right-wing extremism / neo-Nazism at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences for his master's thesis . From 2011 to 2016 he was a research assistant and doctoral candidate at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Jena. In 2016 Quent was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.
Quent's main areas of work are political sociology and public sociology . His research is on racism , radicalization , right-wing extremism , right-wing terrorism and vigilantism . Quent has published several writings, including in Auspolitik und Zeitgeschichte and Berliner Debatte Initial .
In 2012 Quent worked as an expert in the investigative committee "Right-wing Terrorism and Authorities" of the Thuringian State Parliament . In 2016 the city of Jena awarded him the price for moral courage .
He is the founding director of the Institute for Democracy and Civil Society (IDZ) , a non-university research institution sponsored by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation . The institute is the implementation of an agreement of the coalition agreement concluded in 2014 by the Thuringian state government and started work on August 1, 2016. His appointment as director of the IDZ was criticized by the Thuringian parliamentary groups of the AfD and the CDU , because Quent was previously an employee of the LEFT MP Katharina König-Preuss and, according to media reports, had announced that Quent would be appointed director before the institute was founded. The position was also not advertised publicly. After an anonymous criminal complaint, the responsible public prosecutor dealt with the allegation. The then CDU parliamentary group leader Mike Mohring also criticized that the IDZ was designed to take on tasks of the protection of the constitution; unlike this, however, it is not subject to any parliamentary control .
Public appearances and journalistic activities
As an expert in the fields of right-wing extremism , vigilantism , political violence and terrorism , Quent is present in national and international media as well as in civil society organizations, including courage against right-wing violence and trade unions such as the GEW .
