Maxime Omer Mathieu "Max" Décugis (born September 24, 1882 in Paris , † September 6, 1978 in Biot ) was a French tennis player . He is the record holder for most Olympic medals in tennis if you count the interludes in 1906.

Career

Décugis won his first medal at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris . He was awarded the silver medal for second place in the men's doubles (at the side of Basil Spalding de Garmendia ). At the Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens in 1906 , he won gold in the men's singles and, together with Maurice Germot , in doubles . By winning the mixed competition with his wife Marie , he ultimately secured all three possible gold medals in tennis. At the Olympic Games in 1920 he won the gold medal in mixed with Suzanne Lenglen and the bronze medal in doubles with Pierre Albarran .

He was also successful in the non-Olympic tournaments. He won the French Championships, the forerunner of the French Open , eight times in singles between 1903 and 1914 and in doubles from 1906 to 1920 together with Maurice Germot ten times in a row (14 times in total). He also won seven mixed games. At that time (until 1925), however, only French could take part in the French championships. His greatest success was the victory with André Gobert in the doubles competition at Wimbledon in 1911 . In singles, he made it to the semi-finals in 1911 and 1912 . At the hard court world championships in 1914 he won doubles once and four times in mixed. At the World Indoor Tennis Championships he also won once in doubles and twice in mixed. He played for the French Davis Cup team in six years and won 6 of 15 matches.

Personal

Décugi's father was a merchant in the Quartier des Halles . The father's company name was Omer Décugis et fils , although the accent is missing from Max Décugis' surname in the birth certificate. English sources used the last name inconsistently. The name with "é" comes from the municipality of Cuges-les-Pins .

Décugis married Marie Décugis in 1905 , daughter of the French painter François Flameng . After her death in 1969, he married Suzanne Louise Duval that same year.
