Max Karl Joseph Theodor Freiherr von Eberstein (born July 19, 1830 in Berlin ; † September 21, 1889 at Genshagen Castle ) was a Prussian major general , Lord of Genshagen and Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John .

Life

Max was a son of the Prussian Major General Robert von Eberstein (1801-1882) and his wife Pauline, née von Eberty (1800-1882).

Military career

After visiting the cadet houses in Bensberg and Berlin , Eberstein was transferred to the Emperor Franz Grenadier Regiment of the Prussian Army on April 22, 1847 as portepeef ensign. In 1848 he took part in the suppression of the March Revolution in Berlin and in the same year was seriously wounded by a shot in the thigh during the war against Denmark in the battle near Schleswig . Awarded the Second Class Military Medal of Honor , he was aggregated to the regiment as a Second Lieutenant on May 13, 1848 and assigned to the regiment on December 14, 1848. From the middle of 1850 to the end of February 1851 Eberstein was III. Battalion in the 3rd Guards Landwehr Regiment to Lissa . For further training he completed the General War School from October 1854 to July 1857 , rose to Prime Lieutenant in mid-January 1858 and was in command as a company commander in the 2nd Battalion in the 2nd Guard Landwehr Regiment in Koblenz from mid-August 1858 . There he was promoted to captain on June 30, 1859 and on February 23, 1861, he was transferred to the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot as a company commander .

During the war against Austria , Eberstein was in command of the 1st Battalion in the 2nd Guards Landwehr Regiment from May 15 to September 20, 1866, and took part in the battles near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz . When he was appointed chief of the 5th Company, he was transferred to the 74th Infantry Regiment in Cologne on October 30, 1866 and aggregated to the regiment on July 7, 1868, giving him the character of Major. On March 1, 1870 Eberstein received the patent for his rank and was appointed commander of the 2nd battalion on July 27, 1870 after mobilization on the occasion of the war against France . As such he fought at Spichern , Colombey , Gravelotte and Bois de Vaux as well as the siege of Metz . His work was honored by being awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

After the war, Eberstein was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 18, 1875 . Three years later he was transferred to the army officers and on March 12, 1878, he was appointed commander of the 4th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 72 stationed in Torgau . In this position he was promoted to colonel in mid-April 1878 and was awarded the Crown Order II in September 1883 . Granted the character of major general, Eberstein was put up for disposal with a pension on October 17, 1883 with the approval of his resignation .

He died on September 21, 1889 on his Genshagen estate.

His regimental commander, Colonel von Pannwitz, wrote in his assessment on January 1, 1869: “A capable officer, who is characterized by a keen interest in the prosperity of the whole cooperative, has a trained eye for the weaknesses of the younger officers and, in given cases, with tact and Decisiveness occurs. Its practical usefulness is undoubted. "

Eberstein married Pauline Schulz (1830–1908) on September 3, 1854 in Heinersdorf. The couple had a son:
