Friedrich Wilhelm August Sigismund von Pannwitz (born March 30, 1819 in Tzullkinnen , † July 20, 1900 in Darmstadt ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

August was a son of the Prussian captain a. D. and chief forester Wilhelm von Pannwitz (1787–1856) and his wife Julie, née Kohl (1801–1871).

Military career

After visiting the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin , Pannwitz was transferred to the 4th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on August 5, 1837 as a second lieutenant . For further training, he completed the General War School from October 1840 to July 1843 and worked as a teacher at the division school of the 2nd Division from February 1844 to July 1845 . Then he was ordered to take up the fortress of Danzig and the surrounding area until the end of July 1848 . This was followed by commandments as adjutant to the governor of Danzig and with the 10th Infantry Brigade . As a prime lieutenant from May 1850 to June 1851 he was a company commander in the 1st Battalion in the 14th Landwehr Regiment in Gnesen. After being commanded as adjutant of the 2nd Landwehr Brigade, Pannwitz rose to captain on June 22, 1852. With this promotion he was commanded as adjutant of the 2nd division until December 16, 1854. On April 10, 1855, he was appointed company commander in his main regiment. Pannwitz was promoted to major in mid-June 1859 and in mid-November 1859 appointed commander of the 2nd battalion. In the same capacity he took over the fusilier battalion on September 14, 1860, with which he was deployed at the end of August 1863 on the occasion of the Polish uprising to secure the border.

Meanwhile promoted to lieutenant colonel, Pannwitz took part in the battles near Trautenau , Königgrätz and Tobitschau during the war against Austria in 1866 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords. Promoted to colonel , he was transferred to Cologne on October 30, 1866 as commander of the newly established Infantry Regiment No. 74 . Pannwitz led this association at the beginning of the war against France in the Battle of Spichern and received the Iron Cross 2nd class for its work . On August 8, 1870 he took over the 27th Infantry Brigade for the further duration of the mobile relationship , with which he participated in the battle of Colombey , the sieges of Metz and Mézières and the battles at Étuz and Pontarlier . At Forbach he was wounded and was from November 3rd to December 14th 1870 leader of a mixed detachment of all arms to enclose Montmédy and keep watch over Longwy .

Awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class, Pannwitz was appointed commander of the 28th Infantry Brigade in Wesel after the peace treaty on June 3, 1871 and promoted to major general on August 18, 1871 . With the approval of his resignation request , he was put up for disposition on December 12, 1874 with the character of lieutenant general . On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Spichern, Emperor Wilhelm II honored him on August 6, 1895 by awarding him the Crown Order, Second Class, with a star.

Pannwitz married Klara Schob (1833–1903) on March 20, 1851 in Gnesen . The couple had several children:
