The Messerschmitt P. 1101 was a test aircraft for testing the sweep angle of a future aircraft. The wings could be adjusted in different positions on the ground.
development
The aircraft was based on a development order from the Air Force High Command (OKL) for a single-seat fighter with a top speed of 1000 km / h at an altitude of 7000 m, which was issued in mid-1944. The P.1101 should have been used to test the swept wings and should not be submitted to the OKL as a draft for the tender, but the Messerschmitt P.1110 to be developed below .
As the time allotted Heinkel HeS-011 - turbojet not yet available, which was a prototype with a Junkers Jumo-004 equipped -Triebwerk. The wing sweep of the P. 1101 was only adjustable on the ground at an angle between 35 ° and 45 °. The aircraft was captured by the Americans in April 1945 before its completion at the Messerschmitt factory in Oberammergau (the so-called Upper Bavarian Research Institute ). They shipped the prototype to the US for testing. To verify the findings, the Bell X-5 was created , whose swivel blades could be adjusted in the air. Research results also reached Sweden and formed the basis for the development of the Saab 29 "Tunnan".
