Michael Pewny (born November 11, 1963 in Vienna ) is an Austrian boogie-woogie , jazz and blues pianist .

Live and act

Pewny received classical piano lessons from the age of six, burdened by his father Leopold Pewny (1940-2018) . At the age of 13 he first came into contact with boogie-woogie. From this point on, this style was the focus of his musical work. At the age of 13 he discovered his love for the blues and heard recordings by Albert Ammons , Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis . 1979 Pewny made his first public appearance at the Hietzing Adult Education Center ; In 1981 he played in the Viennese club "Papa's Tapas". After graduating from the International Business College Hetzendorf , military service and studies at the Vienna University of Economics and Business , later Danube University Krems , and other club appearances and sessions ( Jazzland , Roter Engel, Starclub Wien), he recorded his first LP "Vienna Boogie Woogie" in 1988 with Torsten Zwingenberger on drums. In 1990 Bellaphon produced the CD "Left Hand Roller" with Pewny and the English singer Dana Gillespie .

After a few trips to the USA, preferably to New Orleans , with Günther Schifter and the Jazzhouse Ramblers from Krems, touring and television appearances, he recorded his second CD “Boogie on My Mind” in 1992 with Martin Wichtl and the singer Sabine Ruzicka from Krems. He had appearances at the Vienna Jazz Festival and festivals in Hamburg , Paris , Munich , Kitzbühel , Cincinnati , Ecaussinnes , Burghausen (with Big Jay McNeely & Dana Gillespie), Ermelo , Laroquebrou and trips to Dallas , Chicago and the Far East , which inspired Pewny in 1999 with Al Cook , Martin Breinschmid and his father Leopold for the recording of "Movin 'to Chicago".

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary on the stage, the CD "20 Years Jamboree" was released in 2000. In 2001 Pewny launched his own label Susy Records "Steamin 'Blues" in 1999 . In 2003 his first DVD was produced and then there were festivals in Lugano (Switzerland) with Silvan Zingg and Axel Zwingenberger , as well as La Roquebrou (southern France) with Jean Paul Ammouroux, Martijn Schok, Ricky Nye, Christian Bleiming , Errol Dixon , Stefano Franco, Greta Holtrop and Karen Caroll from Chicago. In 2003 he was involved in recordings with Jean-Paul Amouroux. In 2004 he had an appearance at the Wiener Konzerthaus with Peter Rapp . From 2007 to 2014 he was musical director and artistic director of the International Brunner Blues & Boogie Woogie Festival in Brunn am Gebirge . After further releases, his first solo album “The Hollywood Pianist” came out in 2012 after a title from his first CD (with Torsten Zwingenberger) was used in the Hollywood film He's Just Not Into You with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston . In 2015 Pewny played in the Radiokulturhaus Funkhaus Wien .
