Michael Schmid (born November 7, 1980 in Vienna ) is an Austrian football referee . He is a member of the Lower Austrian Football Association and belongs to the Wienerwald group of the Lower Austrian Referees College.

Career as a soccer player

At the age of ten, Schmid began playing football for SV Gablitz . In 1996 he moved to FC Tulln , where he was used up to the reserve team and ended his activity as an active footballer in 1998.

Career as a football referee

On August 25, 1998, at the age of not even 18, Michael Schmid passed the referee examination and, in addition to his studies, devoted himself to his career as a game director. After his first assignments as assistant referees and in the lowest divisions, the people in charge of the Lower Austrian referee board became aware of the talented and enthusiastic young referee, which is why he was accepted into the talent squad. There Schmid was challenged and promoted accordingly, whereby he climbed the ladder of success almost every year.

Schmid started playing in the Lower Austrian regional league in 2003 . On August 26, 2005 he directed his first game in the Regionalliga Ost ( ASK Kottingbrunn versus FC Waidhofen / Ybbs ).

After he made his debut in Austria's second-highest division on March 16, 2007 in his qualifying game for the Erste Liga SC Schwanenstadt against DSV Leoben (3-0) and was able to convince in the following qualifying games, Michael Schmid became from January 1, 2008 included in the squad of the Austrian Bundesliga referees.

Completely unexpectedly, Schmid made his debut in the Austrian Bundesliga on April 4, 2009 in the match between SV Mattersburg and SK Sturm Graz (0-0) when referee Bernhard Brugger injured himself in the 33rd minute and he had to step in as substitute referee .

Internationally, Schmid has so far made two appearances as assistant referee , one in the Swiss championship and one in the UEFA Cup at the match between FC Everton and Metalist Kharkiv .

Private

Michael Schmid, who successfully graduated from the language-oriented grammar school Tulln ( English , Russian , Spanish , Latin ) with the Matura , is studying medicine . He is married to Christine and has a son, Tobias.

If he still has free time in addition to his family, studies and refereeing, he does endurance sports (running, cycling) and likes to go to the sauna and fish to regenerate .
