The ÖFB Cup in its form since 2004

The Cup of the Austrian Football Association was in the 2008/09 season played for the 74th time. After the cup competition was only played on an amateur basis last year because of the EURO 2008 , it took place again this season as usual. The official name of the competition was "Stiegl-Cup" for the fifth time in a row.

The victory went to FK Austria Wien for the fourth time in a row , who defeated the first division club FC Admira Wacker Mödling in the final on May 24, 2009 in the Mattersburger Pappelstadion after a 1: 1 (0: 0) draw in extra time with 3: 1 . The other opponents of Wiener Austria on the way to the cup victory were FC Admira Wacker Mödling II (away, 3: 0), FC Lustenau 07 (away, 5: 1), SK Sturm Graz (away, 0: 0, 1: 1 behind Extra time, 5-3 on penalties ) and SC Magna Wiener Neustadt (away, 1-0).

A total of 58 amateur clubs from nine regional associations as well as the 22 professional clubs from the Bundesliga and the First League took part in the 2008/09 season of ÖFB Cup . The amateur clubs played in a preliminary round from 29 clubs, which competed in the first main round, where another nine amateur clubs were added. For the first time, all 10 Bundesliga clubs had to compete in the first round. In addition to the 38 amateur and 10 Bundesliga clubs, there were also the 12 first division clubs that formed the 60 clubs in the first round. The qualification criteria for participation in the preliminary round were regulated differently in the individual federal states. Each federal state allocated a predetermined contingent of starting places to clubs from the regional league and the respective highest national league . SV Horn , who won the Amateur Cup last year , which is not part of the official ÖFB statistics, got a fixed place in the round of 16 .

First round

60 clubs played in the first main round. All 22 professional clubs of the Bundesliga and the First League as well as the nine regional cup winners started here. In addition, there were the 29 victorious clubs from the preliminary round.

Bundesliga First League State Cup Winner

This cup season started better for the Bundesliga clubs than that of the 2007/08 season, as all ten Austrian top division clubs won their games. Of the clubs from the first division, only three of twelve clubs failed with FC Gratkorn, Austria Lustenau and Wacker Innsbruck.
