The Cup of the Austrian Football Association was in the 2009/10 season played for the 75th time. The official name of the competition was "ÖFB Stiegl-Cup" for the sixth time in a row. The winner, Sturm Graz, is entitled to take part in the third qualifying round for the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League .
The defending champion was the record Austrian Cup winner FK Austria Wien , who recently emerged as the winner of the cup competition four times in a row. The Viennese, who had not lost a cup game since May 23, 2004, failed this time in the round of 16 with 0: 1 at LASK Linz . For the reigning champions FC Red Bull Salzburg , a 2-0 defeat at SK Sturm Graz also ended in the round of 16. The Austrian record champions SK Rapid Wien continued their negative cup tradition - last participation in the finals in 2005 , last cup win in 1995 - and were eliminated with a 2-3 defeat at SK Austria Kärnten .
SK Sturm Graz and SC Magna Wiener Neustadt were able to qualify for the final, which will take place on May 16, 2010 at 4:30 pm in the Klagenfurt Hypo Group Arena , and Sturm Graz won 1-0.
The games of the ÖFB-Cup are not only a question of prestige, but also a battle for prize money, which has increased significantly compared to the previous year (figures in brackets). The participants in the second round receive 4,000 euros (3,000) entry fee. In the second round, they will receive 8,000 euros (5,000), in the quarter-finals 25,000 euros (10,000) and in the semi-finals 40,000 euros (25,000). The two finalists will be rewarded with 120,000 euros (80,000). Then there is the advertising revenue and the shared viewer revenue.

Eight of the ten Bundesliga teams made it to the second round. Of these eight teams, two had to go into extra time, SK Sturm Graz (against TSV St. Johann / Pongau) and SK Rapid Wien (against SC-ESV Parndorf 1919). The rest of the teams clearly won their games. Of the twelve teams in the first division, two also failed, namely SCR Altach and SKN St. Pölten.
The biggest surprises came from the amateurs of SK Sturm Graz (3: 1 against Kapfenberger SV ) and those of FC Admira Wacker Mödling (2: 0 against SV Mattersburg ).

2nd round
The second main round brought consistently favorite victories. Only the 7: 6 success on penalties, after a 0: 0 draw, of FC Blau-Weiß Linz against the second team from Austria Wien was a result that was not exactly expected. This made Blau-Weiß Linz the only regional league club that made it to the third main round. In all other games, the higher-class teams prevailed; one of them, however, only on penalties. SC Magna Wiener Neustadt was 2-0 down at FC Pasching up to the 88th minute, before one player less - Christian Ramsebner had to score in the 80th minute after a yellow-red card - and in the 90th. Minute they equalized. After the goalless extension, goalkeeper Sašo Fornezzi secured promotion to the next round with two saved penalties in the decisive penalty shoot-out. The comparisons between the Erste Liga clubs were also balanced. In the duel of the promoted team, FC Dornbirn was able to prevail 3-1 after a 1-1 draw in extra time against TSV Hartberg in its own place. FC Gratkorn had to go to penalties at FC Red Bull Salzburg II after a 1-1 draw and a 2-2 draw in extra time before the 7-5 win was clear. The highest victories were achieved by SK Rapid Wien with 7-1 at FC St. Veit / Glan and FK Austria Wien with 6-0 in the small Viennese derby at FAC / Team for Vienna . Champion FC Red Bull Salzburg had to be content with a narrow but safe 1-0 victory in the Salzburg derby at SV Grödig.
The former Bundesliga club and now regional division Grazer AK suffered a scandal in the home game against FC Lustenau. Graz were down 2-0 in the 76th minute when Roland Kollmann was punished for a foul with a red card and had to leave the field. Some Graz “fans” then stormed the field. Referee Thomas Prammer had to stop the game. This was verified 3-0 for FC Lustenau and the Grazer AK was also punished with a fine of 7500 euros.

Round of 16
The last remaining regional league club, FC Blau-Weiß Linz , had the chance to play against the Austrian record champions SK Rapid Wien at home. In front of 7,000 spectators, Rapid Vienna missed numerous chances before the break, so that the regional league team could go into the break with a 1-0 lead. After the break, the clear favorite took advantage of their superiority to a narrow 2-1 win.
In the remaining games there were two comparisons between Bundesliga clubs, three comparisons between the first division and the Bundesliga and two clashes between clubs in the first division.
The big hit was staged in the Graz UPC Arena , where SK Sturm Graz met FC Red Bull Salzburg . The Graz team were able to celebrate a deserved 2-0 victory over the reigning champions. With this, the Salzburg team also gave away the chance of winning the double (champion and cup winner).
The clash between LASK Linz and the cup series winner and defending champion FK Austria Wien also promised explosiveness . The Linz team managed the surprise and inflicted the first 1-0 defeat on the Viennese, who had not lost a cup game since the final defeat against the Grazer AK on May 23, 2004. The gold goal was achieved by René Aufhauser , who already contributed a goal to the cup victory in 2004 in the service of the Grazer AK . Overall, it was the first cup defeat (since the 2: 3 at SC Untersiebenbrunn on March 19, 2002) of Vienna Austria after 28 games in regular time.
In the comparison between the first division and the Bundesliga, all three higher-class teams prevailed. While FC Dornbirn and FC Lustenau could compete at home, First Vienna FC 1894 had the bad luck of having to compete away from home. SC Magna Wiener Neustadt - Mensur Kurtisi scored all three goals for their 3-1 victory at FC Lustenau - and SV Ried (2-0 at FC Dornbirn) were able to celebrate clear successes. The SK Austria Kärnten had long worried about the success despite home advantage before two minutes before the end of the winning goal to 3: 2 succeeded over Vienna.
In the duels of the First League there was a western derby between leaders FC Wacker Innsbruck and championship favorites SC Austria Lustenau, which the guests won 1-0. The FC Admira Wacker Mödling , who also plays along for the championship, it had despite home advantage against FC Gratkorn tremble long. After the extra time also ended goalless, the favorite only prevailed 4-2 in the decisive penalty shoot-out .
The games of the round of 16 took place on March 9 and 10, 2010. The exception was the match between SK Sturm Graz and FC Red Bull Salzburg, which was brought forward by one month to February 10, 2010 due to Salzburg's qualification for the knockout phase in the Europa League . The original plan was to play the game on February 9th at 7:00 p.m., but since ORF showed the game live, it was postponed by one day.

Quarter finals
The quarter-finals, which were played on March 30 and 31, 2010, were drawn on March 14, 2010 as part of the ORF broadcast “ Sport am Sonntag ”. This brought two duels between Bundesliga clubs and two comparisons between the Bundesliga and the first division, in which the first division clubs were unlucky enough to have to play away.
The quarter-finals were surprised by the defeated Bundesliga bottom SK Austria Kärnten , which received SK Rapid Wien . Although only 3000 spectators wanted to see the game, the Klagenfurters showed great morale and converted a 1: 2 deficit into a 3: 2 win. Rapid Wien had continued its negative series in the ÖFB Cup. This game was broadcast on ORF 1. The duel between SC Magna Wiener Neustadt and LASK Linz , which is now being looked after by the former trainer of the Wiener Neustadt team, Helmut Kraft , also promised explosiveness . The guests looked like the sure winner for a long time, as the home side had to run after a 0-1 deficit in vain. It was only in the third minute of stoppage time that Wiener Neustadt managed to equalize through captain Johannes Aigner . This broke the morale of Linzers and Wiener Neustadt was able to prevail in extra time with 2: 1.
Last year's finalist FC Admira Wacker Mödling was able to challenge SK Sturm Graz in front of 6750 spectators. Despite having a home advantage, the Graz team were only able to defeat 1-0 just two minutes before the end of extra time with a goal from Jakob Jantscher . The game between SV Ried and SC Austria Lustenau was even closer . The Bundesliga team took the lead 1-0 as planned, but Lustenau forced extra time one minute before the end of regular time, which ended goalless. So the decision had to be sought in the penalty shoot-out, in which SV Ried had the better end with 4: 2. A curiosity was that the game had to be interrupted for six minutes because assistant referee Andreas Wiltschnigg injured his ankle so that he could not continue. After no fourth official had been assigned, a replacement had to be looked for in the audience, who was ultimately found in state league referee Rudolf Hofinger.
This eliminated the last two teams in the first division . The semifinals were thus contested by four Bundesliga clubs .

Semifinals
The semifinals were drawn again on April 4, 2010 as part of the ORF broadcast “ Sport am Sonntag ”. The four Bundesliga clubs SK Sturm Graz , SC Magna Wiener Neustadt , SV Ried and SK Austria Kärnten qualified . The match between SV Ried and SK Sturm Graz was broadcast live on ORF 1.
The SC Magna Wiener Neustadt was able to land a surprisingly clear 4-0 away win at the Bundesliga relegated SK Austria Kärnten. The team had an excellent attitude from coach Peter Schöttel and, although they had to play away, left no doubt from the start that they would make it to the cup final. U21 team player Alexander Grünwald was able to bring the Wiener Neustädter into the lead in the eighth minute. After A-team player Patrick Wolf increased to 0-2 in the 33rd minute, the rest was just a matter of form.
More certain than the result suggests, SK Sturm Graz achieved a 1-0 away win at SV Ried. Klemen Lavrič headed his team in the lead after just 19 minutes. Then Sturm Graz controlled the game and failed twice on the goal post. SV Ried could never put the guests in serious danger.

Endgame
While SC Magna Wiener Neustadt , which was only launched in 2008, was able to qualify for the cup final for the first time, SK Sturm Graz took part again in the final of the Austrian Football Cup after 2002 (3-2 defeat against city rivals Grazer AK ). The Grazer's last cup win was in 1999 (1: 1 and 4: 2 after extra time against LASK Linz ). Of the teams at that time, only Mario Haas was in the SK Sturm squad. At Wiener Neustädtern, captain Johannes Aigner and Ronald Gercaliu , as cup winners with FK Austria Wien ( 2007 ) and Mirnel Sadović , as the Bosnian-Herzegovinian cup winner with FK Sarajevo ( 2005 ), have final experience. The 1. Wiener Neustädter SC , which merged with SC Magna Wiener Neustadt , last played a cup final in 1965 (1: 2 against LASK Linz).
The 2009/10 OFB Cup winner is entitled to qualify for the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League , where he will take part from the third round.
After SC Magna Wiener Neustadt was denied a penalty kick in the first minute of the game, coach Peter Schöttel's team took over the command on the field for the time being, but was unable to work out any countable successes. It was only after about 30 minutes that SK Sturm Graz was able to balance the game. After the break, the Graz team increasingly took over command, but initially failed due to the well-staggered defense of the Wiener Neustädter. The approximately 25,000 Sturm fans who had traveled with them had to wait until the 81st minute of the game before the Grazers scored the winning goal after a pass from Samir Muratović through Klemen Lavrič .
The winner's trophy was presented by ÖFB President Leo Windtner and ÖFB General Director Alfred Ludwig to Sturm Graz captain Mario Haas, who took over from Mario Kienzl when he was substituted on in the 78th minute . For Mario Haas, who has been with the club since 1993 with two short breaks, this was an honor for his loyal service.
