Michal Březina (born March 30, 1990 in Brno , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech figure skater who starts in a single run .

Career

Březina began after the 1998 Olympics for hockey to care. His father, a former figure skater himself, recommended figure skating. After half a year of ice hockey training, he switched to figure skating. Březina had his first triple salchow at the age of twelve, and his first triple axel at 15 , which he describes as his favorite jump . Březina trains most of the time in his hometown Brno, but also for some time in Oberstdorf . He cites Jozef Sabovčík and Jeffrey Buttle as role models . His sister Eliška, who is six years younger than him, is also a figure skater and competed in her first senior world championship in 2012.

Rise to the top of the world

His first international success was winning the Nebelhorn Trophy in 2007, ahead of his compatriot and defending champion Tomáš Verner . In 2008 he finished second behind Verner at the Czech championships, and in 2010 he was Czech champion ahead of him. In 2009 he was second behind Adam Rippon at the Junior World Championship . The year 2010 marked the breakthrough in the senior sector for Březina. At the beginning of the year he was fourth at the European Championships in Tallinn . A few weeks later, he played his first Olympic Games in Vancouver and was tenth. At the world championships in Turin , his debut at world championships , he achieved his greatest success so far with fourth place.

2010/11 season

Březina had to cancel the planned Grand Prix competitions at the beginning of the 2010/11 season due to an operation on a varicose vein in the abdominal area. At the Czech championships in mid-December, he went back to, but could not defend his title against Tomáš Verner .

He finished eighth at the 2011 European Championships in Bern .

At the World Championships in Moscow , Březina was in seventh place after the short program, in which he did not show a quadruple jump, but a slightly over-rotated triple flip- triple- toe loop combination and a nice triple axel . He started furiously in his demanding freestyle with a quadruple toe loop and a quadruple salchow (his first quadruple jumps in the competition at all), but fell at the end of his freestyle with a triple flip and a triple lutz . With that he missed the chance to win his first World Cup medal and finished fourth like last year.

2011/12 season

At the international Grand Prix competition Skate America , Brezina won the title in 2011 after dominating the short program by a large margin and thus still achieving the highest overall ranking despite mistakes in the freestyle. Březina finished his first Grand Prix final in sixth place.

Březina finished the Czech championships behind Tomáš Verner .

At the European Championships , he was fourth.

At the World Championships in Nice things looked promising for Březina after the short program. With a personal best of 87.67 points, he was in second place, not two points behind Patrick Chan . Among other things, he showed a clean quadruple Salchow on his birthday and received only level 4 ratings for pirouettes and footwork. However, he could not use his good starting position. In the freestyle, he made numerous expensive mistakes, for example in his two quadruple jumps and the triple- Axel- triple- toe loop combination. In the end, it was enough for sixth place.

After the season Březina went to the USA in order to be able to train with Wiktor Petrenko in Hackensack .

2012/13 season

The Grand Prix series season opened Březina with a sixth place at Skate America . In his second competition, the Cup of Russia , he won the bronze medal, but could no longer qualify for the Grand Prix final . He canceled the Czech championships due to a fever.

At the European Championships in Zagreb Březina won his first medal at the European Championships with bronze , although he had dislocated his shoulder in training.

The World Cup he finished after a failed free program only in tenth place.

2013/14 season

At the European Championships Březina was fourth for the third time in his career.

As he had done four years earlier, the Czech finished his second Olympic Games in tenth place.

After the short program, he had to retire from the World Cup due to an ankle injury.

After the season Březina decided to leave the USA and coach Wiktor Petrenko and return to Karel Fajfr in Oberstdorf . As a motive, he gave financial reasons. The association only paid the high training costs in the USA for the two pre-Olympic years.

2014/15 season

At the European Championships , Březina once again missed a medal with fifth place.

He finished the world championship in 15th place. Once again, the Czech failed to call up his performance potential and to keep his program together nervously. He had particular difficulties again with standing his planned quadruple salchows .

2015/16 season

The European Championships in Bratislava initially went well for Březina when he finished third after the short program despite a fall at the four-time Salchow. His freestyle slipped away from him again. He fell on both attempts at the fourfold salchow and thus lost his concept again, so that further errors followed in the other jumps. The disastrous freestyle dropped him to tenth place in the end, which was the worst European Championship result since 2009.

Things went better for Březina at the World Championships in Boston . Although he crashed as usual during his four-fold Salchow attempts in the short program as well as the freestyle, he managed not to lose concentration and still keep his programs together. In the end, ninth place was enough for a single-digit result. In 2017 he married the figure skater Danielle Montalbano according to Jewish custom.
