Mikaël Samy Silvestre (born August 9, 1977 in Chambray-lès-Tours , France ) is a former French football player .

Club career

Silvestre played for Stade Rennes from 1995 to 1998 . He completed 49 games in the top French league and made Inter Milan attention. A little later he moved to the Italian first division club, but could never really establish himself in the team. Silvestre made 18 Serie A appearances before joining Manchester United .

Manchester United

After moving to Manchester, he first played in central defense alongside the Dutchman Jaap Stam . In this position, however, he could not bring his skills to optimal use until coach Alex Ferguson put him on the left side. He showed consistent performance and was an important support for the team for a long time. In 2003, he had completed most of the game minutes in the team when the team won the championship in the Premier League . It was Silvestre's third league title at Old Trafford . On September 15, 2007 he tore a cruciate ligament in the league game against Everton and fell out of the first team until his comeback on April 9, 2008 when he won the quarter-finals in the Champions League against AS Roma .

Arsenal FC

After the first day of the new 2008/09 season, Silvestre moved to Arsenal . This was the first player transfer between United and Arsenal since 1987. He was given shirt number 18, previously worn by Pascal Cygan . Silvestre made his debut on October 18, 2008 against Everton, which was also his 250th game in English football. Portland Timbers

Chennaiyin FC

National team

In the French national team he was not as convincing as he was at Manchester United. Silvestre made his debut on February 27, 2001 against Germany in the French senior team, but could not play in the team at the 2002 World Cup , even if he was in the squad. In qualifying for EURO 2004 , when “Les Bleus” dominated Group 1, Silvestre got stronger and stronger and was one of the most consistent French in the end.
