MotorSport is a song by the US rap trio Migos , the Trinidad and Tobago- born rapper and singer Nicki Minaj and the US rapper Cardi B from 2017. The first single from Migos' third studio album Culture II was written by all the artists themselves , as well as written by the track's producers , CuBeatz and Murda Beatz .

backgrounds

The backstory to MotorSport is part of a feud between participating interpreters Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. In its original, unreleased version, the song was only performed by the second rapper and Migos member Quavo . When Cardi B heard this recording, she wanted to take part in the work, which was initially welcomed by all parties. According to Minaj, however, subsequent changes to her stanza were required. The line “If Quavo the QB , I'm Nick Lombardi ” should originally have retained Cardi B's name instead of Quavos, suggesting a master-student relationship. In addition, she was forced to cut out a vocal part contributed to the track , which she said she loved. Minaj found her colleague's behavior in the course of the creation of the song ungrateful and said that if she had been offered a feature with a more successful rapper at the beginning of her career, she would have been more friendly. The theory of a dispute between the two stars made based on various clues even before the song around and lived by the fact that the two musicians are seen together in any setting in the music video again. However, this was justified by the schedule of the two artists. Minaj later criticized both Cardi B and Migos for not denying the rumors of a beef , which had not yet taken place at the time, while in the public eye she was “the bad guy ”.

There was also a difference of opinion regarding Takeoff's text. In this, the rapper expresses the desire to see Minaj's breasts , which she later received negatively. She said she hadn't heard her name before it was published.

Music and lyrics

Motorsport is a Trapsong , the genre typical of deep 808 - bass drums , fast hi-hats and claps is highlighted. A synthesizer reminiscent of bells plays a simple, catchy melody. Quavo raps the first, Offset the second, Cardi B the third, Nicki Minaj the fourth and Takeoff the fifth. Before the first, between the third and fourth and after the fifth verse, a refrain performed by Quavo can be heard. The autotune voice effect is also used in several places . The single version has an intro and an outro , which have been shortened in the album version.

In his stanza, Quavo addresses the eponymous motorsport , especially illegal street races , before he continues to emphasize his dissolute lifestyle and his libido . In terms of content, Takeoff takes a similar approach, who takes luxury and expensive branded products as the central motif in his part . Offset's text, on the other hand, builds on its success through crime , especially in relation to the drug business . Cardi B attacks rumors about her person in her verse and takes up the subject of false friends who stand against her behind her back but pretend support. She also compares herself to the legendary Latin singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez , and extols sex with her significant other , Offset. Nicki Minaj displays a dominant attitude in her segment that lyrically underpins her success and status within her scene. She tells a female listener that she will never reach her place, even if she copies it, and threatens her if she wants to mess with her.

Music video

The music video for Motorsport plays during a storm in a futuristic in its aesthetics the cyberpunk genre corresponding city . Their buildings, mainly skyscrapers , are predominantly black , but are contrasted by striking neon signs and tubes in various bright colors . Flying cars appear in several settings; every now and then the musicians stand in short shots on one of the roofs or drive a car. During the stanzas, the artists can usually be seen in one of the skyscrapers themselves and stand in a room with a conspicuous square ceiling lamp in front of a vehicle, whereby the carriages and the color schemes of the scenes differ depending on which rapper is performing. The only interpreter who can be seen in another room is Nicki Minaj. Quavo's clothes are neon green and stand out against the background - this one is black, like the car he is standing in front of. During his verse, purple holograms of himself are repeatedly faded in. Offset and Cardi B stand together in the room, which is now bathed in a red light - the car is also colored accordingly. Minaj raps her verse in a white , octagonal corridor in front of an equally bright car; several tubes illuminate this. The musician wears a very shiny , silver suit and floor-length, pink hair . During Takeoff's lecture, the room is shrouded in a cool, blue light, with the red car in the background breaking sharply with the color.

criticism

Motorsport received positive reviews. Special praise went almost unanimously to the female artists who stand out clearly on the track compared to their male colleagues and whose punchlines, delivery and flow would be the highlight of the song. Their two verses were seen as a joint triumph, also because their appearance on the same track was taken as a statement against the view that there can only be one successful female hip-hop musician.

success

Especially in the USA , MotorSport was a great commercial success, which managed to reach number 6 on the charts and to be awarded triple platinum; in the rest of the world, however, it sold significantly worse. In the German-speaking area, it could only prove itself in the Swiss charts, where it landed at position 54.
