Attractions

Hauselt Memorial Building

William Alfred Passavant founded an orphanage in Mount Vernon in 1866 with the help of the lawyer Peter Moller , which was supposed to take care of children who were damaged in the Civil War . The property was bought by the neighboring village of Pelham and then incorporated into Mount Vernon. In 1884 the official name of The Wartburg Orphans' Farm School of the Evangelical Lutheran Church was established. The word Wartburg came in the name, because the plant evoked memories of the Wartburg in the founder Passavant . The facility is now a Lutheran non-profit organization that supports older adults.

A historic building on the site of this organization is the Hauselt Memorial Building . This is a building erected in 1883, which initially served as a chapel, later as a school, hospital and office building and is now used as a museum. The organization was financially supported by the estate of the businessman and president of the German Society of the City of New York , Carl Hauselt (1828–1890). The following chapel, consecrated on the same site in 1904, is characterized by remarkable architectural elements.
