NGC 1686 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 250 million light years from the Milky Way and about 125,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy IC 2104 .
The object was discovered on December 26, 1885 by the astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
