NGC 1699 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 172 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years across. Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair with NGC 1700 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1694 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2001ep was observed here.
The object was discovered by Samuel Hunter on February 13, 1860 .
