NGC 1679 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBm in the constellation Gravestones in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 40 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light-years across.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on November 18, 1835 .
