NGC 1657 is a faint barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is an estimated 189 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years across .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1653 , NGC 1654 , NGC 1661 .
The object was discovered by Édouard Stephan on December 21, 1881 .
