NGC 1678 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble-type SA0 in the constellation Orion at the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 209 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1670 , NGC 1682 , NGC 1683 , NGC 1685 .
The object was discovered on February 1, 1786 by the astronomer William Herschel with an 18.7-inch telescope .
