NGC 1653 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E0 in the constellation Eridanus the southern sky . It is estimated to be 190 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years across .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1654 , NGC 1657 , NGC 1661 .
The object was discovered by William Herschel on February 1, 1786 .
