NGC 2222 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Painter in the southern sky . It is an estimated 107 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly. Together with NGC 2221 , it forms a gravitationally bound pair of galaxies.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on December 4, 1834 .
