NGC 6415 is one of several stars of existing asterism in the constellation Scorpio .
It was mistaken for a star cluster when observed on August 26, 1826 by James Dunlop ; During his observation of the area, John Herschel noted “a great nebulous projection of the milky way”. Both observations made it into the catalog as an entry.
