NGC 6392 is a 11.7 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sab in the constellation Apus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 156 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on June 17, 1835 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, which during two observations “pF, S, R, glbM, 20 arcseconds, 50 stars in field” and “F, S, R, glbM , 20 arcseconds, has a star 13m Sp (one radius of neb from edge by diagram) "noted.
