NGC 6398 is a 12.5 mag bright barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Peacock and about 235 million light years from the Milky Way.
It was discovered on July 7, 1836 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, which "eF, S, R, almost certain it is not a small double star. Definition much improved. It is certainly a nebula and, with long attention, I see another, still fainter, exactly on parallel, and 30 seconds following “noted. The second named object is NGC 6403 .
