NGC 6380 (also Tonantzintla 1 and Pismis 25 ) is a globular cluster 35,500 light years away in the constellation Scorpio .
The star cluster was discovered on June 29, 1834 by John Herschel using an 18.7 inch telescope and was later included in his New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer .
NGC 6380 has long been thought to be an open star cluster . Independent research by Andrew David Thackeray with the 74 inch Radcliffe Telescope in Pretoria and by Paris Pişmiş at the Tonantzintla Observatory revealed its true nature in the 1950s.
