NGC 6438 is an 11.7 mag bright, lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 in the constellation Octant and about 102 million light-years away from the Milky Way. It has a strong interaction with PGC 61793 (also called NGC 6438A ).
It was discovered together with this on June 2, 1835 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who noted "pB, R, vgbM".
