The night of Hanover is a cycling criterion held in Hanover from 1975 to 1986, from 1997 to 2011 and since 2016 .

Emergence

The night race was initiated in 1975 by Reinhard Kramer , the chairman of the Hanoverian Cycling Club from 1912 , who then organized the race for a quarter of a century. Initially, the race led over an approximately 620 m long circuit around the Hanover market hall , which was bypassed for 100 laps. The bike race was very popular and had a high number of spectators (approx. 20,000) right from the start. In 1987, the criterion was discontinued, because due to a lack of sponsorship money, top-class stars could no longer be engaged.

New beginning

The new beginning in 1997 was made by the Lower Saxony Cycling Association and Hannover Sports Consulting GmbH . The budget for the event is currently (2008) € 180,000. The audience numbers range between 30,000 and 75,000. In 2007 there were around 30,000, in 2008 and 2009 around 50,000 spectators. An estimated 30,000 came in 2010.

The side program includes a derny race and youth races U 15 and U 17 .

All about the opera from 2008

At the 2008 race, which was held in its 24th edition, there was a major innovation. It was held on a new race track "Around the Opera " in Hanover City with 80 laps on a 740 m long circuit., The new organizer, Eichels-Event GmbH, is organizing the entire event for the first time. The team has been sporting director Thomas Ziegler, ex-professional from the T-Mobile team since 2008 . At the start of the main race in 2008 there were 43 drivers. In 2009 there were 39 cyclists, in 2010 there were 38.

In May 2012, the 2012 event was canceled for economic reasons. On July 2, 2015, the organizer announced a new edition of the Night of Hanover with a new circuit on the Friedrichswall in front of the town hall on July 26, 2016.
