action

Hans-Jürgen Massaquoi was born in Hamburg in 1926 as the son of the German nurse Bertha Baetz and Al Haj Massaquoi, who came from Liberia and studied in Dublin . Hans-Jürgen didn't get to know his father back then. His paternal grandfather is Momolu Massaquoi, Consul General of Liberia in Hamburg and the first diplomat from an African country in Germany.

After a short, carefree life in his grandfather's villa, Hans-Jürgen moved with his mother to a working-class district in Hamburg-Barmbek-Süd when he was still a child , because his grandfather was needed as Minister of Post in Liberia. In the neighborhood he met Klaus Mahnke and Fiete Petersen, two friends for life. While his mother works as a nurse at night, he stays with Elisabeth Möller, who later almost belongs to the family; like Franz Wahl, whom Bertha met at work and whom she later falls in love with. However, because of his position as head of human resources, he is forced to join the NSDAP .

Because of his dark skin color, the boy faced numerous problems in the emerging Third Reich . For example, despite good performance in school, he is disadvantaged or pilloried in school sports, and he is denied entry to the German Young People , the Wehrmacht or access to air raid shelters in the event of attacks. He and his mother have to fight against prejudice and try to survive in increasingly inhuman times, whereby Franz as a party member only supports the family to a limited extent, which is why Bertha finally separates from him. Nevertheless, Hans-Jürgen shares his love for Germany and the desire to be one of yours with the “Aryan” Germans.

Hans-Jürgen falls in love with the blond and light-skinned Evchen John . When they are caught, he is arrested by the Gestapo and can only be released with the help of his good friend, the policeman Reesen. With his help and that of many other good-natured people, Hans-Jürgen and his mother managed to survive the war in Hamburg.

Reviews

“The problem of a book adaptation that only has a limited time to tell its story is tackled by the film: The plot flies in fast motion; sometimes it looks simplified and shortened. The second part gains speed and drama. A moving piece of film was created primarily through the play of the top-class cast, which encourages human warmth and solidarity. "

In a review by Spiegel , the film was certified as being “more local history than historical drama, more folklore than analysis of the circumstances at that time”. The reason is the perspective from the mother's point of view, who instinctively judged the Nazi era, but does not understand and analyze it. With its Nazi villains and "do-gooders", the film does not provide much illuminating: "History lessons like from the gingerbread house ."
