Nekopara ( Japanese ネコぱら ) is an anime series by the animation studio Felix Film . The plot is based on the computer game series of the same name . One OVA episode was published in 2017 and 2018 . The twelve-part television series started on Japanese television in January 2020.

Production history

OVAs

In July 2016, the game publisher Sekai Project announced the planning of a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.com with the aim of raising money for the production of an original adult video animation . This started in December of the same year with the aim of collecting 100,000 USD . This specified goal was achieved within a few hours of the start of the campaign. The crowdfunding campaign was due to end on February 11, 2017 and raised just over $ 963,000 by then. The period was extended to meet the final financial goal. In March of the same year the goal was achieved and USD 1,049,000 was raised.

The OVA was created in the Felix Film and ixtl studios. Hayashi Hiroki directed and the screenplay was written by Yūta Kikuchi. The music to be heard in the OVA comes from the pen of Yūgo Maeda. The 58-minute OVA was originally scheduled to be released on December 26, 2017. Due to a mistake by Tokyo Otaku Mode, which was responsible for sending the crowdfunding prizes, some of the supporters received a key on December 22nd to activate production on Steam . The OVA can be purchased on Steam.

The song in the opening credits is called Baby → Lady LOVE and was sung by the singer Ray . Kotoko sang the song in the credits with ▲ MEW ▲ △ MEW △ CAKE .

A second OVA, based on the visual novel Nekopara Extra , was published at the same time as this on July 27, 2018. The final title for the second OVA is Symphony by Luce Twinkle Wink ☆.

Anime television series

During Comiket 95 it was announced that an anime series for the computer game series was in production. The series was created in the Felix Film studio . Yasutaka Yamamoto directed and character design was done by Yuichi Hirano. Gō Zappa wrote the script for the series, while Akiyuki Tateyama composed the music for the series.

The first episode of the anime series was released exclusively in the United States on July 6, 2019 during the Anime Expo in Los Angeles . In Japan , the first two episodes were shown on December 24 of the same year during a special event in Tokyo . The series officially premiered on Japanese television on January 9, 2020 on AT-X , Tokyo MX and BS11 . The intro Shiny Happy Days was sung by the voice actors Yuki Yagi , Iori Saeki , Shiori Izawa , Miku Itō , Yuri Noguchi and Marin Mizutani ; Yagi and Saeki also sing the outro with Yōdamari no Kaori .

The series consists of twelve episodes. In Germany , Wakanim's series will be shown in a simulcast in the original with German subtitles .

Kashou Minazuki ( 水無月嘉祥 , Minazuki Kashou ): Kashō is the protagonist and comes from a family of cooks. He decides to move out of home to open his own pastry shop . Kashō is a talented cook and baker .

Chocola ( ショコラ , Shokora ): Chocola is an energetic and cheerful Neko with brown, long hair. She feels very drawn to Kashō, whom she calls "Master", so that she cannot bear the thought of not being by his side. For this reason, she follows him to his new restaurant. She is Vanilla's twin sister .

Vanilla ( バニラ , Banira ): Unlike Chocola, Vanilla is calm and introverted. She has long white hair. She hardly shows any emotions , but she loves her twin sister so much that she never leaves her side. Chocola and Vanilla are the youngest cats in the Minazuki household.

Shigure Minazuki ( 水無月時雨 , Minazuki Shigure ): Shigure is the younger sister of Kasho. It seems that she has romantic feelings for her brother. She takes care of the cats in the household and supports her brother with his work.

Azuki ( アズキ ): Azuki is the eldest of the Nekos in the Minazuki household. Although she is the oldest Neko, she is the smallest physically and has a mischievous character. She coordinates the work of her younger sisters at work in Kashō's pastry shop. She also has the character of a tsundere , often acting sarcastically and roughly to hide her true feelings. She is a munchkin cat .

Maple ( メイプル , Meipuru ): Maple is the second oldest cat in the Minazuki family. She has an independent and sensible character. Also, an allusion to a Tsundere character is made because she is dishonest towards herself. She likes to go to cafes to try all kinds of food and drink. She would like to become a singer , but her low self-esteem and the fact that she is just a Neko and could make it big stop it. Maple is based on an American curl cat .

Cinnamon ( シナモン , Shinamon ): Cinnamon is the third oldest neko in the Minazuki family. She often has dirty thoughts and constantly interprets things and situations on a sexual level, which often makes her aroused. She is close friends with Maple, which is why she wants to stay by her side to support her in her life. She is a Scottish Fold Cat and has purple fur.

Coconut ( ココナツ , Kokonatsu ): Coconut is the third youngest cat in the Minazuki family household. Many look up to her for her cool character, but she would rather be cute than cool. She has low self-esteem due to her clumsiness and self-proclaimed talent freedom. Nevertheless, she tries to work as much as possible in order to look like an older sister and not be a block on the others' legs. Coconut has iris heterochromia , the right eye is orange, the left eye is blue. She is a Maine Coon cat .

One rainy evening, Kashō Minazuki and his younger sister Shigure find a box with two young Neko girls and pick them up. He christened the two Chocola and Vanilla and raised them like his own family. One day Kashō moves out and decides to open a pastry shop , but he discovers that Chocola and Vanilla have hidden in moving boxes so that they can stay with him. Although he is initially against taking them in, he allows Chocola and Vanilla to stay with him if they help out in his shop.

Through his sister, who visits his shop a little later, Kashō learns that Nekos have to wear a bell around their necks so that they can move freely in the human world and carry out work activities. They only get this bell if they pass an exam. All cats in the Minazuki household, including Azuki, Coconut and Maple, already have a bell because they have already passed the test. Shigure decides to prepare Chocola and Vanilla for the exam. The two pass the test, so that Kashō invites Chocola and Vanilla to an amusement park and aquarium . After Kashō comes home drenched during a whale show in the aquarium, he collapses with a strong fever . Chocola and Vanilla are concerned and decide to see a doctor. Since they left their little bells at home, they are stopped by the police . Shortly before they are taken into custody , the visibly battered Kashō shows up, ties the two of them with their bells and goes home with Chocola and Vanilla. The next day, Shigure and the other Nekos visit the pastry shop and decide to run the business as a family business.

The second OVA Nekopara Extra represents a prehistory that takes place six months before the action of the first OVA. She focuses on the everyday life of the Minazuki family when Chocola and Vanilla were little kittens and struggled to adapt to family life.

Chocola and Vanilla wake up and prepare for their first day of work in their master's pastry shop, Kasho. Meanwhile, Kasho's younger sister Shigure and the other Nekos are preparing for their day, for example Azuki and Coconut, who are quarreling again or Cinnamon and Maple, who are on their way to support Chocola and Vanilla in their work in the café . After work, when Maple and Cinnamon make their way home, they inform Kashō that they have put some tuna in the fridge for them. Chocola decides to go buy ponzu for the fish. On the way she meets a young kitten who is hiding when Chocola tries to approach her. When she got back to the pastry shop, she was surprised that the kitten had followed her all the way.

After Chocola learns that the little kitten has no home, Chocola brings her into the house, but tries to hide her from Vanilla and Kashō. This is unsuccessful because Vanilla discovers the kitten when Chocola tries to feed it dried fish. Chocola explains the situation to her sister and fears that Kashō will not allow her to stay with them. However, he contacts Shigure, who takes the kitten in and does some research. The other Nekos are curious about the newcomers, but Shigure rejects the other cats, takes the still nameless kitten to the shower and makes it ready for bed. In the pastry shop, however, Chocola worries about the well-being of her foundling.

The next morning Shigure finds the cat bed empty and after searching, sees that she fell asleep on the heated toilet seat. At breakfast she grabs her food and eats it under the table like a normal cat. Chocola is constantly lost in worrying thoughts, which brings her into embarrassing situations. Coconut and Azuki reach the pastry shop to help out the Chocola and Vanilla, but quickly clash. In the Minazuki house, the cats try to play with their newcomer. However, this shows no interest in it and instead plays with a toy that Chocola used to use. At dinner they find that the kitten has disappeared. Chocola, who finds out about this on the phone, goes looking for her.

While the confectionery staff is getting ready for their working day, Chocola lets the kitten play in her room. However, she quickly gets bored and eventually goes to the kitchen and restaurant area. After a few gimmicks, she flees back to the kitchen, where she is frightened by Kashō, who drops a bowl. As an apology, he gives the kitten a piece of chocolate cake that she hastily devours. The next day, Chocola and Vanilla bring the kitten to Shigure to take their measurements. They decide to name young Neko Cacao because of her love for chocolate. In a final test in which the Nekos recognize and guess objects that are floating quickly over the TV screen, Cacao succeeds in guessing the last object correctly. As a reward, they take her to the beach to play . When the sun goes down, they promise to go to the beach again as soon as it is warmer.

After another hard day's work in the pastry shop, Cacao is waiting for Chocola and Vanilla to greet them. Remembering their past, Chocola and Vanilla wait for Kasho to arrive to greet him. However, he seems lost in thought and not very responsive. The two try to find out what worries him, quickly coming to the conclusion that the pastry shop has got into financial difficulties. They roam the streets promoting Café Soleil, with the support of Maple and Cinnamon. Since Cacao also wants to help, she takes some business cards and distributes them in mailboxes in the city, but gets lost. She meets the girl Chiyo, who tries to accompany her to her house, but gets lost herself and is followed by a flock of crows . The two come again to the place of their first meeting. After a map with directions to the confectionery flies out of Cacaos Hut, they manage to find the right way. In the pastry shop, Kashō explains that he is thinking about a new recipe for summer time, while Cacao can sneak into the café unnoticed.

Coconuts and Azuki's friction is growing rapidly, both at home and at work in Café Soleil. So that the two of them can fight each other with full force, Shigure and Kashō develop a sports competition together. The first duel, a round of twister , between Azuki and Coconut ended without a winner . The second competition is a food-resistance duel between Chocola and Vanilla, which also ends in a draw. In the third competition, Maple and Cinnamon must face a crate, both of which are disqualified . The fourth competition is a relay race , during which Coconut and Azuki are also taken out of the race shortly before they reach the finish line. In the fifth game, an unusual variant of sumo between all participants. The last competition is an obstacle course between Azuki and Coconut, which ultimately ends in a draw, as Azuki keeps Coconut from falling. Coconat recalls that Azuki has helped her many times in the past.

While Kasho is away and Shigure is attending a meeting with other Neko fanatics, the city has stormy weather , so the cats take care of their owners' houses. When Shigure is forced to spend the night in the hotel due to the severity of the storm , the Nekos have to take care of themselves. They start telling each other stories to pass the time. When the storm triggered a power outage , they heard footsteps near the entrance. The cats find Shigure, who has gone home despite the weather, in the hallway and are frightened because she is completely soaked from the rain.

One summer morning, Shigure wakes sadly from her sleep. Since the Nekos are not used to that from her, they worry about her. They make plans to bring Shigure down, but all of them fail. Even the plan to bring her closer to her brother Kashō fails. She says she doesn't know why she's down, but the pastry shop isn't the trigger. She leaves the cafe but does not go home, so the cats follow her up to a cliff . The Nekos reach Shigure before she can jump and declare their affection for her. Shigure explains that she was sad that none of the nekos slept with her, and that the cats' explanations made her happy again.

On a day off, Kashō and Shigure take the family nekos to a nearby amusement park . After visiting several roller coasters and the haunted house , they happen to see a sing-along stage show. When Cinnamon finds out that it is an adaptation of her and Maple's favorite show, she agrees to participate and then recruits Maple to support her. The performance is successful, so that Maple dreams of a future career as a singer . After Maple took on a part-time job in a music business to gain experience in the music business and to earn money, she found out about a singing competition in which one could win a guitar. So she begins to study for the competition. When the singing competition begins, Maple gets scared and is about to leave the stage prematurely. Cinnamon can help her overcome her fear so that Maple can ultimately win the guitar.

The time has come for Chocola and Vanilla to renew their bell license by passing a test. However, after some mishaps during work, both of them ask the other Nekos to help them study for the exam. After doing their chores, the Nekos begin teaching the duo for the actual test, each with a different task: Maple and Azuki are supposed to teach about safety in public, Coconut teaches about suppressing the properties of cats and Cinnamon is supposed to bring the two closer to human behavior, whereby each teacher brings his own peculiarities. Chocola and Vanilla can pass the exam. As a gift for passing the test, Shigure takes the cats to various locations around town, from a temple to various cafes, all day long to learn how to make Cafe Soleil even better.

Chiyo, the girl Cacao befriended when they first met, invites her to her house to play. After Chocola and Vanilla Cacao tearfully say goodbye, worry grows in them, which also affects their work. As night falls, Cacao continues to play with the girl while Chocola and Vanilla discover how much they miss Cacao. The next day the kitten returns to the pastry shop, but immediately hides in a box, which confuses the other Nekos. In an attempt to lure cocoa out of the box, they cook their favorite food and try to throw a party, but to no avail. The night Chocola and Vanilla try to gain access to the box, Cacao comes out and reads them a long thank you letter for their adventures together, saying that she wants to stay with the family forever.

In order to properly enjoy the heat of summer, the Minazuki family decided to spend the day on the beach. Since the cats have grown lately and Cacao does not yet have a swimsuit , they drive into town to buy new swimsuits . Cacao also gets an inflatable tuna for free . They reach the beach and while the family is relaxing in the sun they notice that Cacao, which is sitting on their tuna, is threatened with being dragged by the current . While they are trying to get Cacao out of the situation, the owner of a noodle shop rescues her from the sea. In order to pay off their debts to the man, the Nekos decide to advertise the man's shop. This turns out to be a success and the shop has had guests again for a long time. After work, Shigure arranges for a couple of homeless nekos to live with the man.

The first episode of the anime series received consistent negative coverage from multiple reviewers on the Anime News Network . In the Internet Movie Database , the series received a user rating of 6.3 out of 10 stars based on 111 reviews.
