Neustadt in Europa is the largest city friendship in Europe and comprises 36 cities, municipalities and districts with the name " Neustadt " in seven Central European countries, 27 of them in Germany, two in Austria, one in Hungary, three in the Czech Republic and one in Poland , one in the Netherlands and one in the Slovak Republic. "Neustadt in Europa" is the largest international municipal advertising association ("Mutual Advertising"). The member municipalities currently have a combined population of almost 450,000 (as of May 2019).

Emergence

In 1954 the city of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse invited the mayors of cities called “Neustadt” to a meeting. The good resolution of all those involved to continue this meeting in Neustadt (Holstein) in 1955 and then annually remained a dream.

25 years later, in 1979, at the instigation of the mayor at the time, Paul Goebels, a “second attempt” was invited to a “Neustadt meeting” at the Hohnorfest in Bad Neustadt an der Saale . Official delegations had come from 16 “new towns”. One year later they met again in Neustadt an der Aisch .

For the 3rd Neustadt meeting in 1982 in Neustadt an der Waldnaab , the host city called for the first time a round of mayors as a discussion forum. This founded a coordination committee and elected Hans Schreyegg from Neustadt ad Waldnaab as chairman. This committee was supposed to ensure through targeted actions that the idea does not wither into a company outing for the city councils, but that the Neustadt movement is put on a broad basis, including among the residents.

Goals and Activities

The aim of the working group is to promote tourism and trade and gastronomy in the towns and communities of Neustadt and, above all, to promote interpersonal relationships among all residents of Neustadt across national borders.

The community publishes advertising material and issues the Neustadt prospectus and the Neustadt pass . The Neustadt Pass enables interested parties to become Neustadt ambassadors (certificate, gift and annual holiday raffle). The cookery and baking book “Star Kitchen” with recipes from the member communities was published in 2010, and in 2011 a large color brochure was published which presents the cities of Neustadt in words and pictures in four languages.

The community holds annual three-day Neustadt meetings with up to 1000 official participants. The respective program offer attracts thousands of visitors. The venues in recent years have been:

Members

Many member cities have similarities in their history: The city name mostly goes back to a new foundation in the middle of the 12th to the beginning of the 13th century. Accordingly, the cities were given special rights early on (market rights, brewing rights, licensing rights, etc.) and thus held a prominent position in the surrounding area. Many of them later also became district towns.

What many member cities have in common today is their location in major tourist regions. These include, for example, Neustadt in Holstein (on the Baltic Sea ), Titisee-Neustadt (in the Black Forest ), Neustadt am Rübenberge (on the Steinhuder Meer ), Wiener Neustadt (near the Thermenregion and Lake Neusiedl ), Bergneustadt (in the Oberbergisches Land ), Neustadt am Rennsteig (in the Thuringian Forest ), Neustadt am Kulm and Neustadt an der Waldnaab (in the Northern Upper Palatinate Forest Nature Park ), Nové Město na Moravě on the Bohemian-Moravian plateau and Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ( Wine Route and Palatinate Forest ).
