Ngeruangel (also: Ngaruang , Ngaruangl , Ngerwangel ) is the only island in the Ngeruangel Atoll of the same name , which is located in the north of the Pacific island state of Palau , about 80 km north of the capital Melekeok .

geography

The flat island is the only island in the small atoll . Originally it was actually inhabited, but it was destroyed by a tsunami . The atoll stretches in a horseshoe shape from the island to the southwest and then back to the north. It is under nature protection as the Ngeruangel Marine Reserve . The western reef is known as the Velasco Reef - Emerging Ngaruangel Reef Section ; the lagoon is open to the north through the Ngaruangel Boat Pass . The atoll is separated from the Kayangel (atoll) to the south by the Ngaruangel Passage (Euchelel Ngeruangl, −620 m). Two shipwrecks can be found in the western reef: Samidars at a depth of 5–9 m ( ) and the George Bush Wreck (12 m , ( )), a Japanese boat that was sunk by George Bush on July 25, 1944 .

Administratively, the island belongs to the Palau state of Kayangel .
