Nicky Gebhard

Nicky Gebhard (born July 5, 1952 in Berlin ; † January 23, 2021 ) was a German drummer , author , composer , music teacher and journalist .

Act

Gebhard began studying music in Dortmund in 1971 ( drums and piano ). During this time he worked as a freelancer at the City Theater Dortmund as a musician and arranger . Gebhard became a drummer for various jazz and rock bands , including Günther Boas Band, Zoppo Trump, Meyer's Poporchester and Günter Hoffmann Band.

In 1974 Gebhard moved to the Cologne University of Music to study with Christoph Caskel . At the same time he worked as a stage musician at theaters in Cologne, Bochum and as a studio musician at WDR . During his studies he toured Europe with the rock band Wallenstein from 1974 to 1978 and drummed on the album No More Love from 1976. Further productions followed with the Düsseldorf-based MEK Bilk ( Nett und adrett, 1982), the rock theater MEKBilk ( Abseits ) with the TV appearance at Bio's Bahnhof in 1981 and the Alex Parche Project (1991).

On his three solo CDs Gee Fresh (1996), No Cry Just Music (1997) and Freedom Live (2008), Nicky Gebhard worked with Steve Lukather , Steve Stevens , Bill Evans and Martin Verdonk . In some documentaries on 3sat , ARTE , BR and WDR , Gebhard's compositions from the first Gee Fresh production were used as film music . In 1974 he founded the Percussion Ensemble Mönchengladbach and remained leader of the formation until 1997. As a music journalist and photographer , Gebhard conducted over 200 interviews with the world's drummers for specialist magazines such as drums & percussion , Fachblatt, Sticks , Live Music Artist, Batteur, Rhythm Magazine and Drums USA. His interviewees were Elvin Jones , Tony Williams , Mitch Mitchell , Billy Cobham , Vinnie Colaiuta , Terry Bozzio , Chad Wackerman , Omar Hakim , Adam Nussbaum , Simon Phillips and Airto .

Gebhard was also the author of the drum books Groove Box Volume 1 & 2, Playalong CD for IMP Warner and Groove Box. Gebhard passed on his experience at workshops and drum clinics for instrument manufacturers and advertising partners. At the international sound & music festival in Dortmund he led the drum seminar. In 1996 Gebhard was appointed head of the “Battle of Drums” young drum talent competition at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt. In the same year he acted as musical director of the youth concerts "Percussissimo" in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach . He also taught rock and pop drums as a guest lecturer at universities in Hanover, Dortmund, Freiburg and Basel. In 1997 Gebhard founded and directed the Groove Institute jazz and rock music school in Mönchengladbach. Nicky Gebhard toured the country with his bands Gee Fresh and Grand Jam on Hendrix and played in clubs and festivals.

Gebhard died in late January 2021 after complications related to an operation at the age of 68.
