content

The Union Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific Railroad have received building permits for a route from Sacramento to Omaha . As competitors, the railway companies start their construction activities at one of the end points of the planned route. But Union Pacific Railroad saboteurs carry out attacks on the Central Pacific's explosives to prevent them from advancing in the Sierra Nevada. Lucky Luke is hired to safely transfer a train with nitroglycerin to the Central Pacific line construction team. At the same time, the Daltons escape the prison and suspect gold in the transport of the nitroglycerine. They pursue Lucky Luke, who is only on the road with a captain and a sailor who were also victims of sabotage . The Daltons manage to take over the train and avoid the traps of the Union Pacific. Lucky Luke catches up with the train and even saves the brothers' lives when they try to open the box that contains the explosives. The Daltons keep going until they get to the end of the route. The saboteurs steer the train into the tunnel, but it explodes in the right place, which takes the Central Pacific a big step forward, as it would never have dared to blow up all the nitroglycerin at once. Lucky Luke arrests the Daltons and clears them up, causing them to faint .

background

In fact, there was a competition between the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific in the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad . The government had promised the companies 25,000 square kilometers of government land for every mile. In addition, the companies were given 700,000 square kilometers along the railway line, which they should sell and lease in five years; they could keep the proceeds. The railway line had the highest priority , as it was expected to bring economic benefits. Because of the high rewards, Union and Central Pacific tried to encourage their construction crews.
