The first railway line from today's Severo-Kawkasskaya zhelesnaja doroga network was completed with the connection between Shakhtnaya and Aksai in 1861. This line was connected to Rostov until 1875 and at the same time (1872–75) the Rostov – Vladikavkas railway line was the most important thoroughfare in the North Caucasian network. Mineralnye Vody railway station

Up until the Second World War , a number of other routes were laid, which make up a large part of today's network. The most important of these are the connections from Armavir via Tuapse to Sochi and Adler (this runs beyond the Georgian border to Sukhumi ), as well as branch lines and the like. a. to Nalchik , Kislovodsk , Novorossiysk and Elista . From 1936, starting with the Mineralnye Vody – Kislovodsk line, most of the lines were electrified.

The largest long-distance train stations in the North Caucasian network today include the train stations in Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar , Armavir, Mineralnye Vody and Sochi.

In 2016, a satellite-based train control system was tested between the Adler and Mazesta train stations (16 km long section of the route in Sochi), in which satellite positioning is linked to movement authorizations transmitted via GSM-R . Future development

As part of the preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics , which took place in Sochi, extensive modernization and expansion plans existed for long-distance, but above all for local transport in the Russian Black Sea region. In September 2008, the construction of the first of the two newly planned freight terminals in the city began.
