The church is an important work by the architect Hermann Baur . The parish also includes the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Raimeux in Crémines . The parish of Moutier includes the parishes of Belprahon , Corcelles , Crémines, Eschert , Grandval , Moutier, Perrefitte and Roches .

History and parish structure

prehistory

Christianization in Moutier began in 640 when the missionaries Germanus and Randoald from Luxeuil founded the monastery in Grandis vallis . The diocese of Basel emerged from this first cell three centuries later. The first parish church of St. Germaine stood below their monastery and was demolished in 1873. In their place stands the Reformed Collegiate Church. In the 11th century, the Chalières chapel , today's cemetery chapel, was built. The Benedictine monastery was converted into a canon chapter in 1120 with a provost as headmaster. This period in the history of the provost ended with the Reformation . The Prévôté (provost's office) was divided south of the main Jura ridge to the Reformed creed under the influence of Bern and north to the Catholic diocese of Basel. From April 7, 1862, Catholic masses could be celebrated in Moutier for the first time since the Reformation . During the time of the Kulturkampf , the Roman Catholic cult was banned from 1873 to 1879.

History from 1862

The director of the glass factory (Verrierie) Célestin Châtelain (1783–1864) made it possible for his workers from Catholic countries to celebrate mass with priests from Courrendlin or Delémont in a building known as a “glacerie” . The parish assembly decided on March 17, 1867 to have a new church built by the Basel architect Raeber. It was built in the neo-Gothic style in the quarter of the glass factory, for example at Rue Industrielle 111. On September 10, 1871, the Bishop of Basel , Eugène Lachat , inaugurated the Sainte-Marie church and rectory with a large audience. The church was demolished in April 1966, giving way to growing industry.

The new Notre-Dame de la Prévôté church

In 1947, Bishop Francis von Streng installed Louis Freléchoz as pastor for Moutier, combined with the task of building a new church. In the following years, the mostly Reformed community of Moutier made the large plot of land in the center of the city available for building a church. The Basel architect Hermann Baur was commissioned and realized the new Catholic center of the community with well-known artists from 1963 to 1967. The name "Notre-Dame de la Prévôté" refers to the patronage of the former collegiate church of Moutier.

Building description

Church tower and exterior

The whole system is based on rectangular surfaces and cubes that increase proportionally in height to the choir area of the church. In the southeast corner of the property, the 32-meter-high bell tower stands on three concrete pillars. From there, the three cube-like 4, 8 and 12 meter high concrete buildings are oriented diagonally, northwest to the choir. The Marienkapelle with the organ gallery and opposite the weekday chapel are added to the side. From the wide forecourt, visitors get to the foundation stone designed by Armin Hofmann on the rising corner pillar and enter the church through the entrances to the left and right of the baptistery.

The bells

On July 4, 1964, the five-part bell was consecrated by the bishop and raised in the bell bearer by the school children. The bells were cast in 1964 by the H. Rüetschi company , Aarau. The bells are coordinated with the other chimes in the city.

Interior and artistic equipment

Baptistery

The main entrances to the church are symmetrically arranged on both sides of the baptistery . The baptistery is illuminated by Alfred Manessier's glass concrete windows inserted across the corner . They are supposed to represent the "falling rhythm" of the water of baptismal grace and the "living water flow" from the Jura Heights in blue, yellow and gold colors. Two black marble benches with inlaid symbols such as dove and fish made of white marble border the square baptistery. The baptismal font made of white marble is a conical chalice two steps lower. The French artist Henri-Georges Adam carved the baptismal font into the flat plate in the form of a dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit.

Main nave and choir

Inside of the church with choir

You enter the dark ship at the corner of a square. A corridor leads diagonally to the choir, which is lit with daylight from above . The innovations of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council prompted the architect Hermann Baur to redesign the room. The pews, which are divided into three aisles, face the altar area in a fan shape. A pigeon made of white marble is inlaid in the main course. The floor covering throughout the church is made of black slate. The wide wooden ceiling is divided with square flat prisms. In the bright, high chancel, the popular altar stands on four cubes, which, like the priest's seat and the tabernacle , as well as the base of the ambo, is carved from white marble. All marble elements, inlays and decorations in the church are the work of Henri-Georges Adam. Also by Adam is the long tapestry on the left wall of the choir, with the burning thorn bush that pointed Moses to the presence of God. Ex 3.2  EU The altar cross with enamel inlays was designed by Manessier. The more important works by Manessier, however, are the colored concrete glass windows that form a band of light under the ceiling of the church. The subject of the pictures is the life of Mary in the mysteries of the Rosary . Starting in the weekday chapel with the joyful - through the painful - in the central nave to the glorious secrets above the gallery.

Side chapel

The side chapel is known as the weekday chapel. A crucifix by Hans Loretan hangs on the side wall above a side altar . In addition, the reliquary of the local saints German and Randoald is embedded in the wall. The reliquary made of fine glass and metal is the work of the local artist Umberto Maggioni (* 1933).

Lady Chapel

In the Marienkapelle under the organ gallery stands a statue of the Madonna and Child carved from a marble block on a concrete base by the Ticino artist Pierino Selmoni (1927–2017).

Organ loft

In 1976 the organ was built by the company Orgelbau Kuhn Männedorf . It comprises 30 registers with slide chests on 2 manuals and pedal . The console with a mechanical action is placed several meters away from the organs; the stop action is electric.
