Oberschönau is a district of the town of Steinbach-Hallenberg in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

geography

Geographical location

Oberschönau is a state-approved resort and is located in the Thuringian Forest in the Schönau valley , which is part of the Werra catchment area . In its upper course, which flows through Oberschönau, the river is also often called Hasel or Haselbach .

history

Oberschönau is one of the younger places in the area and was built around the cutting mill called Canzlersmühl in 1555 , which is already documented in the 15th century. The location of the mill was first named Öbern Schonau in 1548 . In 1585 a village is first documented at this point. The Haselbach, which flows into the Schönau in the village, once formed the border between the Hallenberg (Grafschaft Henneberg-Römhild) and Schmalkalden (Grafschaft Henneberg-Schleusingen and Landgraviate Hessen), so that the place was between two rulers until 1619 and then between two Hessian ones Offices was divided before he came in 1791 to the office of Schmalkalden of the Hessian rule Schmalkalden .

In addition to forestry and wood processing, the most important earlier line of business was iron processing after a pipe, grinding and drilling mill was built in 1688, the products of which went to the Schmalkalder rifle manufacture. Although the pipe mill closed in 1805, other metalworking companies were established in the village: in 1790 a wire smelter, in 1804 a pipe hammer. Due to the geological conditions, no agriculture worth mentioning developed on the site; rather, in the course of industrialization, the place became a distinct industrial village for metal processing. During the GDR era, there was a metal processing company incorporated into the VEB Werkzeug-Union Steinbach-Hallenberg and the metal processing company VEB Nageno founded in 1972.

The historical population of Oberschönau from the 16th to the 20th century is documented in a local family book.

The municipality of Oberschönau was incorporated into the city of Steinbach-Hallenberg on January 1, 2019. Before that, Oberschönau belonged to the Haselgrund administrative community .
