The street begins at the intersection of Schönhauser Allee / Choriner Strasse / Sredzkistraße , the location of the Kulturbrauerei , and leads in a north-westerly direction across Kastanienallee to the intersection of Eberswalder Strasse / Schwedter Strasse / Bernauer Strasse , the southern entrance to the Mauerpark . In the immediate vicinity are the Arkonaplatz and other areas of the Rosenthaler Vorstadt .

In the Oderberger Straße, among other things , the Stadtbad Oderberger Straße (1899–1902) built according to plans by Ludwig Hoffmann and the Prenzlauer Berg fire station , the oldest still in operation of the professional fire service in Germany.

The street bears the name of the town of Oderberg northeast of Berlin , as do many other streets in the area with the names of towns in Barnim or Uckermark ( Bernau , Eberswalde , Schwedt , Chorin , Kremmen , Templin and others).

history

With the opening of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Oderberger Strasse lost its peripheral location
For the opening of the Wall, a border crossing was first created on Eberswalder Straße

In the shadow of the wall

During the division of Berlin, Oderberger Strasse was on the border with West Berlin ; the Berlin Wall ran across the intersection with Bernauer Strasse. Oderberger and Eberswalder Strasse were dead ends and were only connected to each other for pedestrians via the northern sidewalk.

In the 1980s there were plans to demolish parts of the street and replace them with new prefabricated buildings . The resistance of the residents formed - unusual for the GDR - in a kind of citizens' initiative on the basis of the local residential district committee (WBA).

In addition, around 1985 the WBA achieved the use of several contiguous courtyard properties as the Hirschhof neighborhood meeting point . Here works of art were exhibited, theaters were played, films were shown and parties were celebrated. The Hirschhof is accessible from the properties Oderberger Straße 15 and Kastanienallee 12 via several backyards. Peter Wawerzinek and the Zinnober group performed in the street , artists like Stephan Krawczyk and Freya Klier lived here and, as a child, the politician Sahra Wagenknecht .

In 1998 the actor Max Riemelt stood in front of the camera for the ZDF Christmas series Zwei Alone in the Hirschhof . During one of the breaks he scratched his first name in the fresh concrete. The lettering can still be read today.

When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, a border crossing was built at the corner of Eberswalder Straße. From then on, Oderberger Strasse lost its peripheral location.

After the turn

Like the neighboring Kastanienallee, Oderberger Straße became a popular residential area for young people after the fall of the Wall in the late 1990s. The overdue renovation of residential buildings led to rising rents and, in many cases, the creation of residential property. However, rents did not rise as high as feared, so that the social structure of the street was partially preserved. Some landlords also contributed to this, deliberately keeping the rents low for some long-established residents.

Cityscape

The development consists almost exclusively of five to six-storey apartment buildings from the Wilhelminian era in a closed construction .

Oderberger Straße and Kastanienallee are now a focal point of going out and nightlife in Prenzlauer Berg. Instead of the previously existing retail trade , numerous fashion and designer shops have also opened.

Planned redesign

In 2007, the Pankow district planned to redesign Oderberger Strasse. The sidewalks should be straightened and the greening reduced. As a result, a citizens' initiative was formed in the street that opposed the plans. In the second half of the year, residents were informed by leaflets, and at the beginning of October 2007 a public survey took place. The focus was on the planned removal of the greenery. Parts of the greenery were created through private plantings. According to the district, however, they hindered traffic. Local residents feared that redesigning the street could destroy the unique character of the street. The initiative was able to ensure that a large part of the greening was preserved and that the street was carefully redesigned.

The development of the Marthashof on the neighboring Schwedter Straße also met with resistance from the residents of Oderberger Straße. However, facts were created through a quick sale to an investor and rapid development.
