Ohio Attorney General
The Ohio Attorney General is one of the constitutional offices of the state of Ohio . The current incumbent is Mike DeWine , who took up his post in January 2011.
history
The office of Attorney General in Ohio was created in 1846 by the Ohio General Assembly . At that time, his responsibilities included providing legal advice to the state government, representing the state in legal disputes and advising state prosecutors. Originally the Attorney General was appointed by the Legislature. With the passage of the Second Ohio Constitution in 1851, it was determined that the future Attorney General would be elected by the eligible population of Ohio. The duties of the Attorney General were kept very general at that time.
In 1952, the Ohio General Assembly expanded the attorney general's duties to include charitable trust trustees and legal advice to other government agencies. It was also determined that the Attorney General can only be prosecuted if the Ohio Governor so requests in writing. In 1954 the term of office was increased from two to four years.
Nancy H. Rogers was appointed Attorney General in 2008 to fill the vacancy created by Marc Dann's resignation . In the same year, 2008, a by-election was held in Ohio to find a permanent replacement. The then Ohio State Treasurer Richard Cordray went out of the race as the winner. He beat Michael Crites (R) and Robert M. Owens (I).
The Solicitor General of Ohio is the chief appellate attorney in the Attorney General's office.
In November 2014, Attorney General Mike DeWine secured $ 22 million in a settlement with the credit score company ScoreSense, a subsidiary of One Technologies. DeWine, along with Illinois Attorney General , Lisa Madigan , and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had filed civil suits against the company. Ohio consumers and the state government will receive a portion of the settlement amount. The FTC stated the following in 2014:
"[One Technologies] lured customers with" free access "to their credit scores and then billed them a recurring fee of $ 29.95 per month ..."
"[One Technologies] enticed customers with" free access "to their credit scores and then charged them a recurring fee of $ 29.95 per month ..."
Over 200,000 consumers had filed complaints against the company.
