Secretary of State of Ohio
The Secretary of State of Ohio is one of the constitutional offices of the State of Ohio . He is responsible for monitoring elections in the state; the registration of business entities in the state (e.g. corporations etc.) and the issuing of permits to these business entities to do business in the state; the registration of secured transactions ; and grant access to public documents.
From 1803 to 1851, the Secretary of State of Ohio was elected by the Ohio General Assembly for a three-year term. As a result of the Ohio constitutional amendment of 1851, the incumbent was elected by the eligible population of Ohio for a two-year term. In 1954 the term of office was extended to four years. The Secretary of State is elected in even-numbered, off-cycle years (no presidential elections) after the party's internal primaries.
The current incumbent is John A. Husted , who took up his post in January 2011.
