World record holder Bob Fitch had defeated the two Italians Adolfo Consolini, reigning European champion, and Giuseppe Tosi, vice European champion, in 1947. But then Fitch ended his career. There were now three favorites for the competition in London : the two Italians Consolini and Tosi as well as the American Fortune Gordien, who had already thrown over 54 m in the Olympic year. Consolini already set an example in the qualification with an Olympic record of 51.08 m. In the final, Tosi improved the record in the first attempt to 51.78 m. Consolini countered in the second round with 52.78 m and won the gold medal. Tosi got three more throws over 50 meters, but he could not gain any more. Gordien could not quite build on his best form, but won the bronze medal with a respectable 50.77 m.

Consolini was the first Italian to win the discus throw .
The bronze medal of the US thrower Fortune Gordien was the 19th of 33 possible for the USA.
