The real favorite, Tamara Tyschkewitsch, could not build on her previous performance. Her compatriot Galina Sybina, on the other hand, hit the ball in the final with a world record of 15.28 m. The first two attempts (15.00 m and 14.58 m) would have been enough for the gold medal. Sybina was the only participant to surpass the 15-mark mark. The German Marianne Werner won the silver medal well behind. Bronze went to the Soviet Russian athlete Klawdija Totschonowa.
Galina Sybina was the first Soviet female Olympic champion in the women's shot put.
Marianne Werner won the first German medal in this discipline.
