The men's downhill run in alpine skiing at the 1988 Winter Olympics was scheduled to take place on February 14 at 11:30 a.m. However, the start was postponed twice due to strong wind gusts and finally canceled at 12:35 p.m. February 15th was chosen as the new date. Since the Alpine Combination was originally planned to take place on this day , it had to be postponed by one day. The difference in altitude between start and finish was 874 meters and the route was 3147 meters long.

The Olympic champion Pirmin Zurbriggen , who had already dominated in training, was in the lead in all interim measurements. His winning ski was a »hole ski« and had brought him first and second in Val-d'Isère and second in Bad Kleinkirchheim in the current season . Like four years earlier in the downhill race in Sarajevo , Peter Müller won the silver medal.
