Runge was four yards behind Pilgrim at the finish. Papazyan was only 13 years old from Turkey. Since Turkey did not provide its own team, he joined the team from the USA.

In a slow race, the field remained closed for a long time. With 60 yards to go, Pilgrim started the final sprint and won thanks to his greater final speed. Only defending champion Lightbody could keep up and was beaten by two feet in the end. The third-placed was already ten yards behind Lightbody.
