Ōmihachiman ( Japanese 近 江 八 幡 市 , - shi ) is a city in Shiga Prefecture in Japan . The name of the city is composed of the name of the former province Ōmi (meaning: "near bay") and the name of the shrine and associated god Hachiman . The island of Okishima (沖 島) belongs to the city .

Chōmei-ji

history

On March 3, 1933, the Mura Utsuro ( 宇 津 呂 村 , -mura ) and on April 1, 1951 the Mura Shima ( 島村 , -mura ) in the Gamō-gun ( 蒲 生 郡 ) in the Chō Hachiman ( 八 幡 町 , -chō ) incorporated in the same gun .

The appointment to Shi under the name Ōmi-Hachiman took place on March 31, 1954 with the merger of the Chō Hachiman, as well as the Mura Kaneda ( 金 田村 , -mura ), Kirihara ( 桐 原 村 , -mura ), Mafuchi ( 馬 淵 村 , - mura ) and Okayama ( 岡山 村 , -mura ) in Gamō-gun.

On March 3, 1955 Kitasato ( 北 里 村 , -mura ) in Yasu-gun and on February 1, 1958 Musa ( 武 佐 村 , -mura ) in Gamō-gun was incorporated into the city.
