The Orcopampa district is located in the Castilla province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on June 22, 1825. It has an area of ​​729 km². The 2017 census counted 8,800 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 5775, in 2007 it was 8318. The district administration is located in the small town of Orcopampa at 3779  m , with 8224 inhabitants (as of 2017). Orcopampa is about 90 km north of the provincial capital Aplao .

Geographical location

The Orcopampa district is located in the far northwest of the province of Castilla. In the north of the district, on the continental divide , the Cordillera Huanzo runs with the 5399  m high Nevado Huajrahuire . The Río Andahua drains a large part of the area south to the Laguna de Chachas . The shallow runoff of the lake south to the Río Colca is blocked by lava flows. The extreme north of the district lies in the catchment area of the Río Velille (in the upper reaches also Río Cayarani), a tributary of the Río Apurímac .

The Orcopampa district borders in the southwest on the Chilcaymarca district , in the west and north on the Cayarani district ( Condesuyos province ), in the east on the Chachas district and in the extreme south on the Andagua district .
