The East Frankish Dictionary from 1993 to 2012, an operating unit of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , Commission for Dialect Research. In Bayreuth , the seat of the government of Upper Franconia, the editor Alfred Klepsch evaluated an extensive archive on the vocabulary of the East Franconian dialects . Since the Jean Paul Society based at the previous location claimed the rooms in the Chamberlain House for itself, the East Franconian dictionary moved to Fürth at the end of May 2012.

The card archive consists of approx. 20,000 completed questionnaires from the period from 1928 to 2001. The questionnaires contain questions about words or idioms in the corresponding dialects.

history

From 1899 the publisher Rudolf Oldenbourg had plans to reissue Johann Andreas Schmeller's Bavarian Dictionary (1st edition 1827/1832, 2nd edition 1872/1877). This had documented all dialects that were spoken in the territory of the then Kingdom of Bavaria, i.e. Bavarian (which was the focus), Swabian , East Franconian and Rhenish Palatinate . In 1911, however, the academies in Munich and Vienna decided not to address this issue and instead created three completely new dictionaries:

The collections for the East Franconian dictionary began in 1913.

Since the 1960s, numerous small scientific treatises on parts of the vocabulary have been written and partially published. The research center concentrated on the writing and sending of the questionnaires, the archiving and the design of word cards. This enabled a selection of approx. 1500 words to be evaluated. The articles, together with 32 word cards , were published on October 23, 2007 as a 640-page “Short Dictionary of Bavarian Franconia” (HWBF). In 2012 the Bavarian Academy of Sciences entered into a cooperation agreement with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen , and the editorial team moved to Fürth.
